    Hi all,

I'm looking for a little advice and clarifacation really on what to do with my current car a Volvo V70 year 2000 ,2.5TDI with 170,000 mls on the clock..

The car is due it's NCT next year and i have a feeling that there could be a bit of work involved to get it right..
So far I think all shocks need to be changed, rear brake pads, SRS airbag service light is on and a few other little bits are not working properly..
Also the wheels that are on the car are slightly too wide for it and does anyone know if that is a fail..

Now i don't have alot of money to spend but i like the car and feel that the engine is good in it.. I ideally would like to get another 2 years driving on a car before I can afford to upgrade to a car in the lower tax bracket..

I think the choices are: put the money into it and hope against hope it goes through, the car is very handy for my lifestyle and very encomical on diesel, but I don't do alot of mileage.

Buy another older car with lower mileage and an NCT for 2 years spending up to €2000 on it.. Or do I put it into the Volvo.

Any input is more than welcome..

Honestly i'd drive the car and run it thru the NCT.

See what shopping list and parts that will need changing.

You might need to spend a couple of hundred on it, but if you by car

espeically secondhand you won't know what could need doing on it before

    its own NCT.

I agree. Put her through the nct and see what comes up. Don't bother with garage before nct unless you know them well. Wider wheels are supposed to fail, as far as I know.

Wider wheels should only be a fail if the tyre or rim protrudes further than the wheel arch of the vehicle ;)

Personally I'd go along with the above recommendations - run it through an NCT before making a decision. At least then you'll know exactly what needs doing and can accurately sum up what sort of money you'll have to put into it.

In the same boat OP. Will be running it through the NCT and seeing how pale the tester comes back to me :P

    Thanks all for the input,
I will run it throught the NCT first, but have to say I will be very embarrassed bringing it in.. Maybe I'll elect someone else to do it for me:D .
The wheels are definately not any bigger than the arches but they do rub when locking either way.. It annoys me but just don't have the monwy to splash on it yet..

If your worried about the wheels rubbing against the arches.

Why not get a decent secondhand standard Volvo alloys or steel wheels

(cheaper again) and it should pass on the respect.

Found the Volvos to be a very good car by the way. Have 2 of them in

    the family :)

Shocks and pads are just wear items and would have to be replaced anyway so no worries on that score.

SRS light shouldn't be too hard to take care of; I'm sure a few Volvo forums would tell you how to sort it out.

It'll do another 170k miles if you look after it.

Also, why not just replace the wheels with some cheap scrapyard steelies for the NCT?

The cheapest car is usually the one on your driveway.

I'd suggest to just put it through the NCT and see what happens. In my opinion, it is not worth spending any money on a car before the test unless something obvious is wrong.
