Am on the lookout for a SWB Pajero, found one for sale, taxed and tested, only she's an automatic and I'd prefer manual. Anyone any feelings on the auto gearbox? Worth it?

The one I'm looking to buy is older than that. I'm poor ya know:rolleyes:
Cheers all the same, something to consider alright. I do think though that an automatic gearbox takes all the fun out of it..

alot alot harder to run, and the manuals are bad enough on diesel.

What year is the one you're looking at?

Oh and many people find the auto's better for off-roading as there's no dropping of drive when going between gears meaning you don't lose momentum ;)

It's a '92 Pajero. Taxed and tested, mint condition too so I'm still kinda tempted.. I do like to shift gears though.

Afraid I've no expierence of those - have a newer one.

The one we bought is our first auto too, and to be honest I was very apprehensive before buying it, but 3 months on and I'm delighted with it.

Have a look here and you might find info of use to you - http://www.pocuk.com/forums/

On the plus side, automatic means you won't get stung for the inevitable large bills for replacing the Dual Mass Flywheel.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but wasn't the DMF only introduced from the '00 onwards models?

as i do alot of offroading, manuals are way better and have more control in many ways, also depends on terrian too but in ireland and in europe in general, manuals and in north america, they like auto because of there terrain

    Fair enough :)

Have no experience off-roading myself so was only repeating what I'd seen elsewhere ;)

I'm open to correction on this, but I think it's mentioned quite a bit as a problem on the Mk2 Pajero over on pocuk.com
Anyway, I'm always amused about people talking about relative fuel economy on 4x4's in the 2.5-litre and upwards bracket, as every last one is a guzzler. To steal a phrase of Jeremy Clarkson's, it's like debating whether Hitler was better with or without a moustache

Personally I wouldn't go for the auto. 2.8 manual only way to go.
Even at that they're an animal on diesel even if you drive like a saint.
The manual 2.8 is a snail, an auto 2.5 is a dead snail.

try to get a manual 2.8 preferably the facelift 140bhp version, you wont get better, but by god are they rare.

Was supposed to meet the guy today to take the Pajero for a test drive,(I couldn't get out earlier coz of the snow), sorted out a time and place, he sent me a text an hour before to tell me he sold it.
Aw f#ck it. Manual all the way I think. I may keep looking.

Not yet, there was a lovely jeep for sale in your neck of the woods but too far away for me to go only to find out it sold. Some jeeps sell within hours. A local guy has a Pajero, but another automatic. May give it a go, but am not too enthusiastic.

Few days later, ended up buying it anyway.:p
She's a Mk1 Pajero, Jap import, Auto, taxed and tested til next september, the guy I bought it off is my go-to guy for the vito or any diesel engine, and I know the Paj has been looked after, mechanically at least, but she'll be a workhorse and that's what matters.

Good luck with her. Looks like it's got Mk2 alloys fitted too.

Don't forget to post up more pics when she's had a bath :D

we had an 1997 jap import and the DMF went in it @ 100k Kms. converted to solid FW and it's still been used a farm jeep (no road work now) with now 250 k on clock

The only time I found the pajero heavy on diesel was when it was towing heavy loads, we bought a patrol for the long distance road work and that baby enjoys her juice but it's much safer and stable for towing livestock

Op good luck with your purchase.

You'd better tell all the people over on pocuk.com in that case.
