my mother wants to get a plasma tv and i was wondering about how the coaxial cable will go into it? i'm assuming the newer tv's wont have coaxial inputs? can i put it through an old vcr and use the component cable on the vcr to plug into the tv? would this affect the picture quality though. she might get freeview in a while but for the minute she is happy with the 8 or so channels she has that the aerial provides

It will have a Tuner and Aerial socket for coax. Make sure the Tuner is Irish Digital Compatible www.saortv.info

It will have SCART for SD (non-HD)

It will have HDMI for HD.

Component is a USA spec only needed for Games consoles.

If it doesn't have at least one HDMI, (ideally 2 or 3) and one SCART (ideally 2) and an Aerial Coax socket and tuner compatible with Irish Digital TV (Saorview), then it's really just a Monitor and not a proper TV.

Nowdays, many LCDs (but not all) are better than Plasma and last longer and are Cheaper. Virtually all consumer "so called LED TVs" are not LED TVs. They are either edge lit (poor) or partial backlit (some patchy, some good) or fully backlit with LED rather than CFL (florescent lamp). Claims of lower power consumption are mostly bogus. Power consumption is related to screen area and brightness. Oddly for same size a modern CRT beats LCD or Plasma, but they are not made for Consumer HD anymore. LCD can use less or more power than same size & Brightness Plasma depending on model.

sorry i got my terminology wrong it is in fact an lcd tv and not plasma:) this is the one she saw in harvey norman the other day and was asking me about it

    http://www.harveynorman.ie/samsung-32-inch-5-series-lcd-tv.html

will this be ok for saorview when it comes out so? she lives in mayo so not sure what the story with that is if there is a hd service already but normal analogue for the time being is grand

quick google found it to be working brilliantly with saorview:)

Just don't pay €79 for a HDMI cable, though;) You can buy one for less than a tenner!
