    Hi,

I am thinking of buying the above. the timing belt was just done a short while ago. its priced at €5,600

the tax is nearly €600 a year.

just wondering how often the timing belt has to be done and if you think this car will be reliable for a few years? or could it start to give trouble as its nearly 7 years old?

apparently they can do up to 300k miles, is this correct?

they are good on diesel too.

it has a service history with it and one owner. do you think it would be a good buy?

would really apprectiate any opinions on the above,

    thanks

That's low enough miles for a diesel, it may well need a few bits and bobs over the next few years to keep her shipshape but if she is sound now it wouldn't be a bad car to buy. Dunno about the belt change frequency on them, someone else will be along to answer that :)

    Whats the power output?

The 90bhp versions are the most reliable, with regards to the turbo anyway

    Thanks Rover James,

Just some more queries in relation to getting the boro. any additional replies would be really appreciated

The tax is nearly €600 a year.

Do you think a diesel 08 skoda would be a better buy as its tax is €156

would save €444 a year on tax. but then have a bigger outlay of cash to get the car but would have it for a few years and because it is a newer car less liklihood of having to spend money on it to repair it over the next few years and it would be more reliable.

then again vw have a great name and the boro is diesel and economical to run also - bar the tax. also because its 04 wouldnt cost as much to buy.

which car do you think would be better?

    thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply Zonda 999

I'm fairly certain it is 100 bph. what does bhp mean. i have seen one with 130 bhp on line. does that mean it can go faster?

    thanks in advance

Presumably the Skoda (Octavia at a guess) is €6000 to €8000 more than the Bora ? I'd sooner the €6000 to €8000 somewhere else than on the road. 5 years of road tax savings will amount to €2000 ish, you'll lose that on depreciation on the Skoda compared to the Bora in the first 18 months if you get a good deal on both.

I think Octavias are one of the most boring, rotten yokes on the road. Farmer going to mass aura about them :pac:

    [/QUOTE]
Timing belt should be done about every 50k. To be honest a VW Diesel thats properly maintained should do 250-300k without and big issues.

if it is a 100bhp pd engine make sure the correct oil was used when servicing.. timing belt is every 60k miles or 4 years whichever comes first. any car can give trouble regardless of age. if the car is well looked after and serviced on time it should be fine. The 130bhp will have a 6speed gearbox compared to the 5 speed in the 100bhp and bigger turbo and injectors etc so it will be slightly faster.

as above regarding tax. you will spend alot more to save a little in tax. it would be different if you were looking at a 07 car compared to a 08.

is it a private or garage sale??

if the car was well looked after and you buy it and look after it 250k miles will be no problem on it. you might need to replace a clutch/flywheel or a turbo down the line but this can be expected

Thanks a million Rover James, Ryanf1 and Sean1141 for your replies,

all extremely helpful. I had thought 100k seemed like a lot of miles for an 04 car or at best a high average but good to hear it can indeed do 250k to 300k. so if i got it and did 20k a year (on the high side for me id say) for 4 years, i should have got a bit out of the car.

one thing though, i googled vw bora and came across one or two threads or people saying that
    1) you can have problems with the electrics
    and
    2) that the parts can be expensive to replace

would appreciate if you have any opionions on the above.

    it is a private sale.

also there is 105k miles on it and they said the timing belt had been done at 90k. full service history available. assuming they only did the timing belt once (i.e. at 90k miles) do you think any damage could have been done to it when it wasnt done at 60k miles or would it cancel out once it was done at 90k miles,

    thank you for you time

it all depends where you source the parts. for example 5L of vw 505.01 spec oil (which the bora will need) from a dealer here will cost about 50 euro. i got the same 5L of oil up north for about 20 euro. you just need to shop around. micro switches in the door can cause problems with centeral locking. nothing major. i had a bora for two years without replacing anything (other than timing belt and service parts). i have also had two seat leons which are basicly the same as the bora/golf and the only trouble i had was a faulty ignition switch on one of them..

    edit
timing belt was done on my bora at 75k miles after 6years. no problems. it wont do harm unless it fails. it would be worth checking if the water pump was replaced at the time the belt was being replaced. alot of people change them when replacing the belt as the belt needs to be removed if the waterpump fails at a later stage. also check if it was just the belt replaced or a full timing belt kit was fitted..

Thanks for all that information Sean1141, very helpful.
I will ask them about the water pump - if it was replaced when the belt was replaced and also if there was a full timing kit put in not just the belt replaced and come back to you with what I find out for your opinion if that is ok?

I will also check the above on the service history - if it will show it..

I prob wont get to test drive it until wed or thursday.

Thanks again for all your help.

no problem. you might want to get a look on www.ukmkivs.net or www.vagdrivers.net
guys on there will know a good bit more about them.

regards service history is it a main dealer or private garage service history??
also just check that the owner had the car from new (they should have if its only one owner) also when you go look at it, it might be worth giving a mechanic you know a few quid to check it over if you are thinking of buying it..

what car are you changing from??
