We removed (through add/remove programs) Office 2000 from around 30 PCs over the summer and replaced it with 2007. My guess is we either didn't do this completely correctly the first time around or something is a bit off. We would have chosen full install (not bothering with Outlook) rather than upgrade or repair. Now we're getting people opening files and it's either opening in 2000, trying to find the 2000 installer or opening in 2007 with it taking a while to go through the final set up. This is not the case on all the machines, '07 works fine on some, but what's up? I've checked add/remove programs and removed 2000 again and also made sure the default on 'open with' is for 2007 and the file types under folder options, etc.

office 200 does not uninstall itself cleanly

you need to use the microsoft cleaner thingy , but they've removed it

While the Windows Installer Cleanup utility resolved some installation problems, it sometimes damaged other components installed on the computer. Because of this, the tool has been removed from the Microsoft Download Center.

so try this instead - YMMV

Toolbox The Removal Wizard gives you a great deal of control over how you clean up users’ hard disks. The Removal Wizard is installed as part of the Office Resource Kit (orktools.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2000 Resource Kit Downloads page.

Hmm, I tried that, but didn't seem to have any success with it. Unless I didn't use it correctly. The Removal Wizard didn't appear to detect the Office 2000 installations and wanted to remove anything from 97 and before...odd since 97 isn't on these machines.
