Can anybody out there advise me on wether you can apply for a student grant after a three year break from a college course.

Studentfinance.ie say three years of a break but, Kildare Grant section state five years.

I am a mature student, in the middle of the appeals process and would be grateful for any response on this matter.

The five year break is for second chance students - it doesn't matter if you are mature or not. If you attended a course and did not finish it - u can pick up a new course and be eligible for a grant AS LONG AS THIS NEW COURSE IS A LEVEL 8.

The 3 year break is for students who want to apply and be assessed on their own income and are mature (23 on the 1st Jan of the yr of entry). These students would have been previously assessed for a grant under their parents. They can now apply under their own income as long as they have a 3yr break in between this course and the last course. Mature students have to be able to prove they were living at their own address the October prior to going to College. If you can't supply the evidence like ESB bill in your own name or other official letters sent to u at your address dated october prior to going to college you won't be awarded a grant. Most students never bother to change their address and all their mail are sent to their parents years after they leave the nest. This is no good to u when u are applying for a grant on your own income.

Just wondering what qualifies for the 'Second chance student'. I have been out of full time education 2005. I am currently doing a part time level 7 degree at night. It says on citizens.ie that I must not have done an 'approved' course in the last 5 years. are part time courses consisered approved?

Part-time courses are not considered approved courses.

Just had a read of Labour and Fine Gaels manifestos and in relation to BTEA I was impressed by Labours policies. As an unemployed ex construction worker I'll defo be voting Labour on Friday as it seems they are the only ones with a strong committment to BTEA schemes and making the application process easier and waiting periods shorter. I'd say Im not he only one in this position and second chance at education would be a lifeline in this time of recession! If students with degrees masters and PHd's are struggling to get work how the hell are the rest of us supposed to manage!!!!
