Children In Sport vs big Egos

I will try to keep this about sport in general as this is not the place for soccer related articles but I need to wait one month before I can apply for access to the soccer forum and I need to get this off my chest.

My son is playing for a club in Co. Wicklow and he is 11 years of age. At the beginning of the season his team (Under 11 division 4) had only 10 players and all recruitment campaigns did not get the team any more players. At the time 5 under12 (U12) players did not have a team so at the beginning of the season the club put the 15 players together to play in the U12 league.
According to the club they had tried to persuade the league to put the team in the lowest division but the league decided to ignore the request based on the clubs result in the previous season (not based on this team's performance) and play the team in Div 1. Below the results:

    Aughrim Rangers A 6 - 0 Wicklow Rovers C 2010-11-07
    Avonmore A 17 - 1 Wicklow Rovers C 2010-10-24
    Wicklow Rovers C 0 - 11 Avonmore A 2010-10-10
    St. Anthonys A 12 - 1 Wicklow Rovers C 2010-10-03
    Wicklow Rovers C 0 - 12 Arklow Utd A 2010-09-26
    Wicklow Rovers C 0 - 7 Aughrim Rangers A 2010-09-19

This is a C team with 10 players that are playing above their age group that just want to enjoy the game.

In October the parents demanded a meeting with the club's committee. At the meeting the chairman promised all the parents that the team will be put down to Div 2 for the Shield competition after Christmas if the team did not pull out and kept playing in the Div 1 League till that time.
To my shock and horror I see now that the league (WDSL) has decided that the team will remain in Div 1 for the rest of the season. As the original promise came from the chairman of the WDSL I still have a tiny bit of hope this might be sorted before the Shield competition starts...
But ...... what are the chances that a bunch of big egos will put the kids first.......

    Kind Regards..........
    An very angry parent!!!!!

Poor kids. I remember my 1st season playing football, despite being in South Dublin we were put in the top division in Wicklow. We were hammered every week. It wasnt nice but we did win one game that season and despite it being 15+ years ago i still remember it very fondly. Kids get over defeats pretty easily. If you keep them together for the season, it would be worth more than winning the league.

thats not too bad. i remember playing under 12's and 14's, heading off with 7 on the bus, borrowing 4 from the other team and getting hammered 9 or 10-0 every week.

the question is, does your son have fun? if he doesn't enjoy playing at his age he should give up. it sounds like the parents are taking it way too seriously.

    @Pauleta

Thanks for your reply. I agree. The challenge now is trying to keep the team together.

Thanks for your reply. You might be right but if the team will loose 3 players because of the league being so pig headed, the team is gone including all the players that are having fun even though they are losing. One player has given up this week with the excuse that he was getting hassled by his class mates because of the BIG defeats. This is not the leagues fault but it can/could have been fixed by the league.
The parents are serious about their kids wellbeing in sports which I think you can never take too seriously.

I come from not only the opposite side of the world but also I see the opposite affect happening here in Australia, where many young kids are being promoted above their age because they are considered "brave-new-talents". And usually it is the parents pushing their kids into higher-level competitions.

I cant say I am pleased about this, because of physical and maturity development reasons, but there has been some research on the subject, entitled: RAE. Relative Age Effect. Maybe you can look some of this up and present it to the governing body?
