    Hi All,
I've been car shopping for the last while, and really like the new Opel Astra,I will be going for a diesel as i do 20k plus miles per year.
It comes down to the 1.3CDTI (95ps) or 1.7 CDTI (110 ps) , I've driven both and there doesn't seem to be much in it in normal driving as far as i can tell.
except for the 1.3 being slightly noisier.

Does anyone have experience of these in everyday driving, performance, economy , how you get along with them etc?
    Thanks

I haven't driven a new Astra with the 1.3Cdti, but I've driven some of the older ones. It's a good engine once it's going, but it does need to be worked hard to get it in the sweet spot. It's also very easy to clog the DPF with short journey, but you should be OK at 20k pa.

I haven't actually driven a 110ps Astra, but I've had a few days in the 125ps, and wasn't that taken with it. Suffers from huge lag like a lot of small engine / highish power ones do nowadays. A bit easier to keep in the power band, and great once it's there, but can take a bit of getting use to. Wouldn't like to live with one around town.

Which model are you going for, and what's the budget? There is only a few hundred euro between the different diesel engines, meaning the 160ps 2.0CDTi isn't that much more expensive than the 1.7 110ps. Unfortunatley, it's not a whole lot better though (which is a huge dissapointment).

Are you planning on keeping it for a while? If so, have a look at the Alfa Giulietta - they are even giving a 90 day gaurantee that you'll love it, or you can hand it back. The 1.6d in Dyamnic mode felt much more sprightly than even the 2.0 Astra, and in normal mode I was getting 4.2l/100km average fuel consumption on my daily commute.

Or...........wait until April and get the new Focus. Probably beat the lot for driveability, although the spec is going down on the new model (no Bluetooth or alloys, can't remember about fogs and A/C).

I concur with most of R.O.R's comments re the 1.3cdti and the 1.6d in the Alfa. On the subject of the latter, I've driven a Fiat Bravo (in Italy) with that engine and it was an absolute gem. Stacks of power, very torquey, very little lag, and good fuel consumption. If I were in the market for a new diesel, I'd be looking at buying something with that engine in it.

    Hi,
Yes I am planning on keeping it for a good few years, do about 70 miles a day.
Planning on going for an SRi or an SE price wise the same money.
Its interesting you mention the lag of the 1.7,I have driven both the 110 and 125 and there is quite a bit of lag the 125 feels worse in that respect and the 1.3 is a willing motor when it gets going but I find it a bit noisier than the 1.7. I am calling to a few more dealers today I'll drive a 2.0 if they have one.
One dealer is also a KIA agent where I took a Ceed diesel for a spin to see what it was like and the 115ps version was a little rocket with little lag but the cheap looking interior put me off.
