I can't give a definitive answer to this, but my best guess is

I accidentally left Wifi on, on my iPhone(I normally have it off unless I am using it) and within about 1 hour my battery went down about 30%, which again is not normal.
So I can only assume that the Wifi continues to 'work' while your phone is locked.

I'm not too sure, but afaik on 3.x it disconnected from the network while in sleep, on 4.0 it seemed to stay on, and if I'm not mistaken on 4.2 it goes off again.

Wifi turns off when locked afaik. If you just do a simple test like unlocking the screen you can quite clearly see that the wifi symbol is no longer there and has been replaced by 3G. After about 1/2 seconds after unlock the wifi symbol re-appears.

Odd that. My iPhone 4 always has 3G displayed when I go to unlock or even just hit the home button when locked.
