    Hi everyone,

My girlfriends 06 Golf has developed a strange problem today. When the car is parked up, switched off, lights off and locked the passenger side headlight and rear light stay on. Only on the passenger side. This isn't a parking light as 20 mins later it is still on. When the lights are turned on, all of them work, but I can't get these lights on the left side to switch off.

    Any ideas?

I wasn't aware that parking lights had to switch off after a while? Are you sure the indicator stalk isn't set to left and if it isn't is the stalk broken in such a way that it moves just enough without clicking to activate the left hand set of parking lights?

Is she leaving the indicator stalk in the turn left position?

Is it the parking light or definately the headlight?

It's the parking light ok, the indicator stalk is turned to the left. I use it when I park half on the path at my local Chinese takeaway as it's on a busy road. Flick the indicator stalk to the side you want the lights on, you get a warning beep when you open the driver's door if the ignition is off.

They are called parking lights and they are for use where there may not be adequate or any street lighting.

Don't know about Mk III, it's on my 07 Mk V.

The parking lights make the car visible if it's temporarily parked at the side of the road and you want to be noticed. Having the lights on on one side only also confirms that the car is parked and not just stopped in traffic which can be useful for other road users.

Bit ot but I'd a 99 golf a while back, and if the back lights went, the engine warning light came on, gave me a heart attack when it first happened!

Not a snipe at you singularly but how could anyone go through driving education and not know what a parking light is really needed for?

I know parking lights and how to use them which I was always told was the side lights eg first set lights. there is no mention from what I recall in any road manuals of these single side parking lights which I've seen on modern cars. just seems pointless to light one side. if I approached a car at night, I'd assume it was just a broken tail light and proceed as I would when I see parked cars on country roads.

Would running lights not kill the battery the next morning thus rendering the car light-less and powerless?

You need them if you need to park the car in a legal but possibly shadowed place or a place where the head lights of the car behind wouldnt let the reflectors shine.

These places are silly places to park a car overnight or for a very long time due to the battery. Generally used when you need to pop into to some place and things like that.

    Thanks guys,

@themerchant - surprisingly enough the golfman name comes from waving a stick around at a little ball!

all u got to do is put your indicator back to the centre position as the indicator switch is now in position that fires the left side indicator. Guess what ?? when u put the indicator lever position on the right side and then get your car switched off, lights off and locked, u will notice that the right side headlight and rear light will stay on. HAPPY DRIVING

Indeed. Newer Audis (probably VWs and Skodas etc. too) sound a warning bell when you open the door to get out to let you know you've left the indicator stalk on. Surprised it's not there in an 06 Golf!
My Bugatti Veyrons do it as well in my underground garage

    You're not a re-reg of bmw520d are you? :D

Like being said above left indicator stalk on but maybe you could start a new thread "Buzzer not sounding on exiting vehicle when parking light is on"
