    Years ago they used to do something to coal that made gas, somewhere around the old gasometer site. Seems the end product was huge piles of something called coke. Happy days :D

    I got a few lumps of coal alright one Christmas but my parents whipped out my presents shortly after.

    On another point, my friend who is Hungarian told me about their Santa. Always makes me think we have it easy with the coal. Their Santa dresses up like a bishop and has a "naughty boy" assistant (like our elves) who dresses like a devil. The kids have to clean their boots the night before and they leave them outside. The idea is that good kids get treats in their boots as we would in our stockings and the bad kids get a tiny broom..... However seeing is no kid is ever 100% good for the year they'd get both in their boots!
