Tesco working hours

Does anyone know what the deal is with tesco only giving employees 20-25 hours a week?
My partner got a job in a new tesco a couple of months ago and she,s only been getting 20 hours the last 2 weeks. She would,ve got as much on the dole.
She says everyone is only getting 20 hours. Would it not make more sense to take on less people and give them more hours.
Then you hear about these job announcements on the radio like tesco creating 1 or 2 hundred new jobs, they dont mention the s*** hours.

Some people actually prefer part-time hours. Maybe it's not the job for her. I find it hard to believe she didn't realise it wasn't a full-time job when she applied.

From tescos point of view it probably makes sense to have more staff working fewer hours because they can bring in more staff during busy times

And having people scared that their hours may be cut makes management a bit easier too.

Also I've been told that if people earn less, the rate of employer PRSI is lower. So it's actually cheaper for them.

OP, what does your partner's contract say about hours?

She was told a minimum of 20-25 hours but probably more if it was anyway busy, but she didn,t get a contract yet. Apparently they,re trying to cut the hours even more cos they,ve been very quiet since it opened. It's been all 4+5 hour shifts so you cant even claim for 2 days dole.

I've been getting 40 hours per week in a well known Irish supermarket chain. They pay above minimum wage and treat their staff well. Tesco has a reputation for this kind of shoddiness.

Very simply its a method of ensuring that tescos keep their costs down and ensure greater flexibility when doing up rotas.

its a lot easier to "employ" 20 people at 20hours each then 10 at 39 hrs each. tesco dont care that they only guarantee 20 hrs to employees and that they can cut them down to the min contracted hours with no notice.

its simply tesco suiting them selves as is their want.

I don't know of any store that has had a position of more than 20 hrs per week in the last 3 months where I live, because I have helping someone look. Yes it's crap that you have to start on a 20 hr contract, but most stores start on lower contracts. Make sure your partner tells her manager she's interested in more hours, but she will probably have to say she's fully flexible. Is she on a temp 13 wk x-mas contract?

I do agree that there should be a dole payment for a 20hr week, she has no chance of a 3 day week and if she works 5 days, she'll get no dole.

seems fair to me their a business not a charity, if people will do the job then i dont see the problem. if people wont work for those conditions then im sure they'd increase the hours

Hi OP I was a Tesco Grocery Manager for 6 years. The reason for your partners predicament is that Tesco have something called Hour Bands.

It works on a sliding scale, AFAIK all new recruit, unless specialist or Management, starton these contraccts. It's gives Tesco flexibility when making rosters. They are fully aware off their employees dole entitlements and expliot that to the full, they are aware that employees can receive money from the DSW to make up thier "lost" hours and exploit this knowledge to ensure greater flexibility.

Tesco see 20 newer part time workers with half entitlements vs-a-vis hours as a greater Asset than 10 X 39hr workers. It cynically allows them to better cover sickdays and promotes better attendance as everyone is desperate for more hours. They also try to spread a 20hr week over 5 days to circumvent workers DFS entitlements, again to improve flexibilty.

If your partner is on a GA contract and work in a non-specialist area such as the shopfloor or checkouts, encorage her to seek a move to a specialist Department, generally if you're good enough and work hard more hours are available in those depts.

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

    Thanks for the replys everybody.
As far as I know you're not entitled to anything from the DSW if you do 5 four hour shifts, correct me if i,m wrong.

It's nothing to do with the length of the shifts. It's all to do with the number of days worked.

If you do 4 one-hour shifts, you still aren't entitled to any benefit.

Yes, this is grossly unfair. Complain to your TD, that's the only route to get the law changed.
