As the title says, there are more services (18) on a Sunday between City Centre and Blessington than the Monday to Friday service (14).

Is this route unique in this regard? I assume it is historical to facilitate day-trippers but is a bit of an anachronism is this day and age...

I don't think it's entirely unique. Before they upgraded it in Network Direct, the 270 used to have over double the service on Sundays (one leaving every half hour from midday to last buses) as opposed to weekdays and Saturdays (one every hour or so from 9am to 7pm) - and I'm sure a few other "gimmicky" services were like that as well.

On weeknights, there is also only 1 56/56A operating between the square and dolphins barn/ringsend.
But at the weekends there are 2 buses operating.
Twice as many buses carrying nobody.... crazy.

Well, when they used to run the 65 to Donard, it wasn't during the weekday for the purpose of commuting to Dublin. It was a weekend journey at a very odd time of the day. (BE doesn't even serve Donard...closest service stops at the junction of the N81 about 8.7 miles north of Baltinglass. Barrack Street, which connects Donard with the N81, is still as narrow as it was two decades ago, too; the 65 ran on that road.)

In CIE days, the Donard Service ran on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from Dublin at 1010, returning 1135, Saturdays at 1515 returning from Donard 1640, and late evening Sundays. None of these trips would allow you to travel from Donard to Dublin and return the same day, as there was only one trip on any given day, so not surprisingly the service was not much used by locals, more by scouts and hikers.

Donard these days is linked to Tallaght Square by a Saturday shopping hours service which operates under the Rural Transport scheme.

On Wednesdays there is a Donard-Baltinglas service, and once a month Donard-Newbridge.
