Help choosing business name

Im in a conundrum here. My company is just incorporating and I need a business name. We are going to be specialising in the recruitment of the top 10-15% of graduate students and also forging out internships for students. This is our main focus, however from time to time we will come across (and already have) opportunities that involve recruiting people who have more experience than graduates. These opportunities are worth more to us financially than the recruitment of graduates, however they will probably be only 20% of the business (but a handy 20%....)

So the initial idea was to name the business Graduate Careers or Grad Careers- i.e. it does exactly what it says on the tin. However I've been advised by two people that it may not be such a good idea as such a name will pigeon hole (in the minds of employers) into solely hiring graduates. Although that is our main focus I do not want to alienate ourselves from a bigger market but at the same time we chose the name Graduate Careers so our objective is clear to all and sundry.

If anyone has any ideas on whats the best course of action I'd really appreciate it :)

Hi RATM, Just out of interest why just grads and the other 20%? Why not all recruitment.

I read James Caan's book from Dragons Den and i liked the way he stayed away from all the career names and went with Alenander Maan Recruitment makes it sound much better, but thats obviously just my opinion.

Anyway I wish you and your business every seccuess and its great to see new ventures starting up

I've chosen a few business names in my time and I've never chosen something so specific. It builds in a sort of inflexibility.

For example, recently I chose the name Teneo for a business. It's a classical word with many meanings "to keep on", "to persist", "to reach out for", "to hold/grasp" etc.

So my advice is find an attribute that defines your business, I searched "aspiration" and somehow got down to Teneo. I would suggest you do the same.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am indeed thinking of spreading out to a larger section of the market but concentrating on my niche as I see several possibilities in it.

I thought of a new name last night - what do people think of Prudent Recruitment ?

I wouldn't like it myself to be honest :)

Fair enough but that was the intention- to give the impression that it has been around for a long time. Anyone got any other suggestions?

I would pick something that represents that you are looking to recruit the best graduates and also reflects that you are the best in your field, off the top of my head:

    Forefront Recruitment
    Pinnacle Recruitment

Given that any graduates you get are those that haven't the sense or inclination to flee the sinking ship that is this country:

    Homestead Recruitment

    Select Recruitment

    Apollo Recruitment

    Agile Recruitment

I agree with Bungler. There are so many two-bit staffing operations around with names like "Pinnacle Recruitment" and "Select Recruitment" and the same old iStock websites. Align yourself to some of the bigger players in terms of branding and get a good website and brand that stands out from the dozens of mediocre agencies in Ireland and you can make your company appear a lot bigger and more prestigious than you really are.

I'm easily in the top 10% of graduates. Why should I use a recruitment agency when I can easily apply for jobs and get interviews and offers myself? There's loads of recruitment agencies out there, but most of the jobs I was interested in recruitment was all done in house.

Because when employers advertise graduate vacanices they get a deluge of CVs and applications- thats where we come in (not for all employers, but for those who want to outsource recruitment). We can recruit quicker, cheaper and more effectively than their own operations which is essentially the raison d'etre of recruitment agencies.

You're fine going direct if you wish but at the moment I have 9 top class jobs for 3 new websites (3 Web designers, 3 developers, 3 online digital marketers ) launching in 2011- we are the exclusive recruiters for these roles and the company is not accepting CVs directly. So in this instance it is beneficial to go through an agency as otherwise you can't have access to these jobs.

Incidentally if anyone is looking for work in the multimedia space get in touch by private message.

  • A few you might also consider:

    Gold Star Recruitment

Thanks for the suggestions guys, some good ones there. But I reckon I'm going to go with Prudent Recruitment- I like the way it rolls of the tongue :)

I think it has too many syllables ending in T. It'd nearly make you stutter. But thats just me :)

Best of luck with the new business!

Prudent is an ugly, ugly word.

Make it an 'on-boarding' and 'off-boarding' enterprise. 'On-boarding' side of the office is labelled 'You're Hired!'. 'Off-boarding' side is labelled 'You're Fired!'. The real money is is private security in the Middle East though. So, for the 'water-boarding' side of the business, the sign'd be 'You're F**ked, My Main Man!'.
Okay, seriously. Why not be agressive and call it, 'University Careers Office' since as I understand it, thats loosely the niche you're after. Or, guaranteed to drive traffic.....the Oirish hybrid version of Hooters......'Me Arse!'

Oh, incidently, I'm a branding consultant (today) and my invoice is in the post ;)

Oh f*k, I'm on a roll today! Instead of the Milk Round, you could sex that up by calling it 'Jugs'. Oh, hang on thats taken isn't it? I saw my priest with a copy only the other day.
Free Beer's taken too, or was....a band I think.

Okay, my final suggestion and this one's on the house........and this is a branding industry insider secret........drop some acid.......and whatever word you can recognise afterwards, that's the one to go with. Sure fire guaranteed success. How you think we ended up with Snickers! ;)

What you are trying to do with just one brand name will be very difficult.
As you friends have rightly pointed out to you, will can get pigeon-holed very easily. A seasoned professional with 10+ years experience under his belt, going to the same recruitment company for a job as some wet-behind-the-ears student just out of college will not sit well with them.

Your best solution will be to create two brands instead of just one. This is easily done thanks to the internet. One could be "Grad Careers" and the
other will have to have an extremely professional and exclusive feel to it.
For example, Hamilton & Benson Pharma Careers or whatever.

But using one brand name to reach two distinct market segments usually does not work.
