    Hey y'all

So as we reach the end of the cinematic year, it's time for us boardsies to celebrate the best (and worst) the last 365 have thrown out. I'm half-tempted to call this years awards the Boscars, but that's far too lame.

Anyway, voting will begin sometime after Christmas, to give everyone a chance to catch up on what they may have missed over the holiday season. The awards, as always, shall take place over on our dedicated film awards forum. You can see last year's categories and winners here.

But before we start voting, I thought it might be appropriate to open up the floor to any comments and suggestions about how we should run the awards this year. Mr.E did a bang up job last year, and probably won't change the format too much, but there are a few small additions I'd like to add anyway. Best Cinematography is one category the camera geek inside me wishes to include. I'd also like to put forward a Best Animation (World Cinema) sub category - as the huge array of fantastic animated cinema outside of Hollywood is just going to be overshadowed by Toy Story 3 :pac: - and perhaps Best Director (World Cinema) too. It'd be nice to have some smaller films in the awards alongside the Hollywood stuff, so any other suggestions for diversifying the awards are welcome :)

Anyway, the nominations shall be beginning in around a week, and will be staying open until the new year, so get thinking about your favourites! And any suggestions, throw 'em down here :)

Anyone think there's merit for a 'Best Adaptation' award? Whether it's from a book, comic, short, whatever the format.

How about best indie or low budget flick?

Is there an award for "Biggest missed opportunity"? ie: A film that had a great idea but was poorly executed.

Right, so have had a bit of a ponder about this, and I'm going to suggest a more in-depth but 'diverse' system for the year. It's perhaps a bit overcomplicated, but it will give lots of films a look in, as opposed to one or two dominating. So four categories:

    1. Best films:
    A number of categories here:
    • Hollywood
    • Independent / Arthouse American (vague, but I'm sure common sense will dictate what this category entails)
    • Irish / British
    • Animation
    • World Cinema
    • World Animation
    • Adaptation
    • Documentary

It's a lot, but it means that one or two films won't dominate. Then, when we've voted for the different categories the individual winners will be put in for Overall Film of the Year. I'm betting the Hollywood film will win, but hey we'll have a diverse line up none the less :)

    2. Acting
    • Best Actor
    • Best Actress
    • Best Supporting Actor
    • Best Supporting Actress

And same as above, Overall Acting Performance of the Year.

    3. Misc. Awards
    • Best Screenplay
    • Best Special Effects
    • Best Score / Soundtrack
    • Best Scene
    • Newcomer of the year (acting)
    • Newcomer of the year (direction)
    • Best Cinematography
    • Best Character
    • Best Director
    • Film that deserved better
And finally, 4. The Walk of Shame awards
    • The Michael Bay award for Worst film
    • Worst acting performance
    • Missed Opportunity
    • Most overrated
Phew. So a lot of categories, and a bit of work, and a lot for a relatively small message board, but hey it could be fun IMO :) Thoughts?

Also, and this is an idea I'd love to work, would be a 'one post per poster' thread where everyone could write up about their ONE favourite film of the year in-depth, i.e. defend your choice sort of thread. We could then vote on the best post too. Strictly one post, one film though - it's a fair enough compromise to avoid listing, me thinks?

So, for anyone who bothered reading that, any opinions?

Sounds good Johnny. With the number of new categories, it might be good to split the nominations into more than 2 waves... Happy to help again this year if you want me to.

    FYP :)
2[*]The Michael Bay award for Worst film

Leave Michael alone!!!! (but seriously it's getting tiresome at this stage)
So, for anyone who bothered reading that, any opinions?

Put Best Newcomer (acting) in the acting category?

I like the categories. Maybe in the Walk Of Shame section we could include a "Worst Excuse For Comedy" award? Couples Retreat would have walked that last year.

This may seem like a trivial suggestion but....

For the 'Best Scene' award, putting a label on film scenes can be spoilerific (there have been two scenes nominated for Toy Story 3 as examples); so when putting up the nominees in a poll, how about only listing the name of the film, and a corresponding write-up in the OP (with spoiler tags)? Where multiple scenes from one film are nominated, the poll could look like:

    Toy Story 3 (I)
    Toy Story 3 (II)
    Kick Ass (I)
    Kick Ass (II)

    etc.

how about a best ensemble cast, some films may not get actor nominations but probably had a great cast of average performances, or good performances that wouldnt make the list,

a film like The A-Team would have a good ensemble cast, noting award winning in the film (unless your gonna insert a genre section it might get best comedy), but the cast worked well together,

    would genres be to much?

Might be worth considering alright, but it seems like the type of award better suited to television.

I think so, yeah. You couldn't just have a few genres, you'd have to have them all - at which point it would become kinda boring.

However, I was thinking about a Best Genre category that would cover all these fanboy-type films, i.e. the kind of B-movies remade as A-movies thing that Hollywood does so much. It would be a chance to reward films that are good within the self-imposed limitations they set for themselves. Stuff like Prince of Persia, for example, or indeed the A-Team. But I think I would be too broad a category to manage. How do you define a "genre film" really? You could heap almost everything in there.

Is this for films released in Ireland, or if the film has been released in the US,can it be included?

Yeah, it is for films released in Ireland. Films which have been released in the US but aren't out here yet don't qualify.
