Did my Thomann Bass gear order

Ordered up an Ibanez Promethean P5110 amp, and an ESP LTD B206 Bass, and a small few little things I needed for my normal guitar rig. Going to be interesting making a switch to bass after 15 years of Guitar, and 28 of Violin, but looking forward to slappinng and popping my hands to death.

D'amp - 250 watts, and can output 500 if a second cab is used. Weights a mentally low 12 kilos, so very luggable for gigs. Tiny too, a little over a foot square. You can unscrew the amp part with 4 thumbscrews and put it in your gig bag if you want to use it with a 4x10 that stays in your band van, etc.

And the Bass itself. Really wanted a 6 string, but couldn't afford the high end stuff for the moment - plus, my guitars and guitar rig cost me enough and Mrs PD would have a flip attack if I spend a load coming up to Christmas again. Tis active, thin neck, good spacing for slapping (Apparently), and is spalted maple which I love the look of.

Fingers crossed Mr DHL will get these to me before Christmas!

You may have to delve a bit into technique, especially with the plucking hand. Even long time four string bass players have physical problems converting to six'ers. Dont fall into the trap of thinking this will be the same as the guitar, because it has six strings. The bass (even a four string) is a different animal altogether to the guitar. The main problem people have with six'ers is muting. Take a look at the clip below. It should be of some help, both from a playing perspective, and also in avoiding physical problems (carpel tunnel syndrome etc). You could also check out L/H technique on You Tube also, as it is a lot different to that of guitar.

I apologize if you know this stuff already. Just trying to get you off to a good start.

Lovely bass BTW. Best of luck with it. :)

Well, the last 6 string guitar I bought was 3k, so I had to go easy buying a bass :)

I'd love to be telling you all how good/bad the amp & bass are, but they're still on the DHL merry-go-round almost a week later. Thomann sent it out in 2 packages, Amp & Stand & Gig Bag in one, Bass in the other. One left a day before the other despite both being in stock and ready to go the same day, but the DHL status update hasn't changed for 3 days. Either the weather's holding things up, or someone's driven a forklift over them :D

Amp arrived anyway, and it's waaaay prettier in the flesh. Can't believe how compact it is - Thomann as usual supplied a 2 pin plug, so I'll be remedying that later. DHL were the courier, but An Post delivered it - guess they're sharing duties. Fingers crossed the Bass will arrive later today/tomorrow.

Stuff finally arrived today, having a bit of fun messing around on the bass, so photos tomorrow. Friend who's well into bass called over with his Lakland for me to fit flush mounted strap locks to it, and he was impressed with the neck on the ESP. It's a roughly machined guitar, so I'll need to smooth out some of the harder edges on it, but it plays beautifully.

    Amp kicks ass too :D

Sorry about the crappy photo, can't find the memory card for my SLR, so the iPhone will have to do. Big thanks to everyone who gave me advice here too, wouldn't have been able to buy anything without your recommendations!

How do you find the six string to play, was it difficult to get used to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Seems grand to me, I came from 13 years of a 4 string 1 inch wide violin to a 6 string guitar that was nearly 2..5 inches wide. 15 years odd on, going from a 6 string guitar to a 6 string bass is okay, the tuning's obviously different, but from a playing point of view it's really ... comfy! Comfy's about the best word I could use to describe it.

First song's learned anyway - Love Foolosophy, promised myself it'd be the first song I'd learn on Bass.

Sorry to jump into the thread but I thought I'd share my experience of the six string bass. I went from 4 string bass to 5 string bass to 6 string bass over the course of a few years. I found it was a much bigger jump from the 4 to the 5. With the 6 string bass the biggest thing I have to watch out for is muting strings I'm not playing. I had to get out of the habit of anchoring my thumb to the pickup which was find if I was just bashing away on the B or E strings but very quickly becomes awkward. The floating thumb technique helps with muting and also amongst other things promotes a consistent hand position. There's a very long thread on it here which is worth a read.

I had the floating thumb technique nailed but gradually got lazy from not being in a serious band and now my thumb is stright back to being anchored at the pickup. Rage!

    hi

how you find the amp. is the low B sound tight? i use markbass lmIII head thru tc electronic 2x10 cab. i was wondering how pomethean reacts in live environment.

is it loud enough for small to medium gigs?

    thx

I haven't gigged it yet, but the sound on the low B is yummy. The boys over at TalkBass have a 24 page thread on it, and they all say it's fine for medium sized gigs, and even okay for the bigger ones if you go through the desk and use the amp as a backline.
