My buddy in work is a real techno-geek, and he tells me today that there is a new I-Phone 5 in the pipeline due about February in the States, and maybe here in April/May ....

Anyone have any other insight ,thoughts, etc, ...or do you think this is way off the mark....:)

He may be talking about the next gen iPad, or else he's talking out his arse. The next iPhone will be announced in may or June, almost guaranteed no earlier. If it is earlier, let's say feb, nobody except the big players at apple know about it. Even when they announce a new model the networks still have to wait to get info from apple.

Hes probably just referring to the CDMA iPhone that is coming out in the new year in the states.

Wont be of any use here, or really anywhere except on verizon in the states, whos network uses cdma rather than gsm.

Your techno geek mate isn't Steve Jobs by any chance? Apparently he's a bit of a techno geek!

Why would apple release a new iPhone in February? Would be very surprised if they did.
He's probably hearing rumours of a CDMA version (absolutely no benefit outside of the US), or perhaps the delayed White iPhone 4. Most people would be tied up in the early stages of their contracts for their iPhone 4 and would not be eligible for an upgrade for a good few months yet so it wouldn't make sense for apple to go and release a new handset until people become eligible for upgrades.

Already 5 replies and no one has pointed out that it's iPhone not I-Phone

Probably because the grown ups here realise that would be a pointless thing to point out!

    OP
There are always rumours of a new iphone every month. Your buddy is just reading whatever topic is trending at the moment.

There were some rumours of a suppossed iphone 5 release around christmas but seeing as the 4 was only released in June that wouldnt make much sense.
Also Apple seem to be sticking to a yearly update of the iPhone so the most likely time for a release is in June 2011.
Toshiba have signed a suppossed deal to manufacture the new retina screens for the iPhone 5 so production hasnt begun at this point. This also indicates a release at that end of quarter 2 start of Q3 for 2011.
