    I have since bought a solar system and am now looking at getting it installed, just have a few questions;

    Can a plumber do the whole job himself, remove the roof slates insert panels lash in the panels and replace slates or should a rooer be doing this? also when the pump station and controller have to be wired up can a plumber do this or should it be let to an electrician? Were shoud the feed for the mains for the pump come off?

    I have prices a few plumbers who said they can do the whole lot themselves from start to finish...would this be normal or a solar installation?

    I could easily see a plumber do the electrics but I wouldn't let anybody only a professional roofer loose on my roof for such major work.. However it would depend I suppose on if it's flat panel or solar tubes as the former would be more invasive....

    You are right in that in a new build, in an ideal world, a roofer would fit the panel, a plumber would connect the pipework, and a spark would wire in the pump station.

    But in practice, most installers registered under the SEAI scheme for retrofitting solar water heating are plumbers, and they have the know-how to do all aspects of the work.

    That said, some plumbers are happy for the roof work to be done by someone else.

    The pump is powered by the controller, which in turn is usually connected to a 3A fused spur which can be taken from the immersion.

    I've seen all sorts of dodgy combinations, including people installing off a combination of ladders and roof ladders - I've even been invited to step out on a plank tied off between two velux windows. But you should really use a proper platform, secured to the wall, and observe all the usual safety requirements - particularly fencing off a hard hat area underneath where a falling spanner could be fatal. It just isn't worth the risk to take shortcuts with safety.
