I stipulated when he moved in that all bills would be shared equally. i don't charge him for the SKY as he doesn't use it that often he does sometimes but he has a TV in his room.

I advised him this morning that as the weather is due to turn bad again (did it ever get nice) and with the Christmas period we should maybe top the oil tank up by €200 worths thats €100 each and he was like you told me the oil which we got in August would last till March - I said it might last till the New Year but then again I didn't account for the freezing spell and I don't want frozen pipes in my house. Was I right to ask him to pay for more oil?

I have posted this in accommodation but not sure if it is better suited here.

    Thanks.

I agree. He should cough up for it, same as you. He wouldn't be long complaining if there was no heat in the house.

I would'nt ask him for the money.... I'd tell him to cough up or ship out, simple as that. Otherwise i,d calculate the cost of oil over a yearly period and add it to his monthly rent and if he does'nt like it then he's not worth renting a room to.

Hot water is only estimated at 20% of heating so i never think the arguement is fair...

However the way i would see it is if he is out of work tomorrow and still living with you i imagine he will use the heating more and still expect you to pay half...

It in my opinion is not a plumbing and heating question but more a morals question

If you rent out the room and agreed he was half the bills then so be it...

You cannot weigh certain bills imo mortage/rent/Electricity and gas/oil/
