    Hi there,

I'm exhausted. I'm in final year and have just spent the past two weeks going through the mills with exams and essays non stop and with little or no sleep. I'm also trying to keep up my job. I don't want to get fired for not coming in, and he wouldn't accept me ringing in sick because they're busy in there because of Christmas. Can anyone give me some advice? I want to ring in sick, I can't go in today I'm literally shaking because of tiredness and nerves. I've an exam again at2 and then I'm going to have to run for a bus right after it and go to work. I don't know anyone in college because I got transferred here and I've nobody else to ask for adivce.

I went in to the doctor but they can't do an appointment for me because they're full.
I've no options now I can't get a letter but I can't go to work later or I'll probably collapse.

I'm feeling cowardly, and my boss won't listen to me being ill especially since they are busy.

    I need some advice please....

fair play to you for working while in college - thats tough going. Could you not have taken annual leave to study while exams were coming up? I know its too late now for that - just ring in sick. Theres no point getting worked up over it - exams are more important that your job at the moment. Good Luck in the exam.

If your boss would accept a doctors note is there any way you would consider going to another doctor to explain you are exhausted? I admire you for working and putting yourself through college but from your post you sound really worn out and stressed so talking to another doctor if you cant get in it own may be an option. Good luck with the exam.

thanks for the replies, rang in sick, was hung up on and then went home. I don't think he understands my situation but it doesn't matter. I went to a doctor's office (there's a psychologist there too) and he told me to ask about appointments, the secretary said if I wanted to come back in an hour that I could be seen to. I did. And I was told by the psychologist that I needed to take a few days off because it seemed like i was going to have a burn out that could lead to further problems. I explained my physical symptoms and I was asked to come back on Monday . he gave me a letter and told me to relax.

thank you for advice guys it spurred e on to make that call

    Hi there,

I know you're busy, but get into a routine. Go to bed and get up at reasonable hours. Have a general view of study topics rather than staying up all hours trying to cram every minute detail.

I'm not sure what sort of lecturer gives students essays to write in the middle of exams, could you not ask for a deferral on the essays?

Regarding work, is there no one at all who could have arranged to take over some of your hours over Christmas? Sick days won't endear you to anyone.

    Hi techni-fan,

Our official exams aren't supposed to be until January but because of staffing problems(so we were told) ,they were moved to December, and all exams and essays (except 1) are due before the end of this week.

This set-up was challenged, but not to our avail. We are a class of 12 in the last year of this degree's running.

With regards work, originally I was promised 2 shifts per week starting November, but this didn't happen despite weekly communication with line manager. Also, I was not expecting the extent of the stress that I am feeling. Some external factors have led to it also, such as my mum being ill and me having to make trips back up home , which I didn't expect.

I was generally prepared for most of my exams but the stress of doing exams as well as the fact that I had been doing up to 4 shifts at work (to respond to line manager's requests despite prior aagreement to accommodate me) per week because he rostered holidays to anyone who had accrued holidays up until now and hadn't taken them, their pay wouldn't be carried over to january so they were approved for now.

It's not like I just sprung the exams on my manager. I gave a detailed list of the exams when I got them in November.

Your manager hung up on you??? What an ignorant assh**e! I would not bother going back to work there if I were you - he sounds like a selfish person who is not interested in the welfare of his employees - only his own profit.
