Trying to downsize the av gear under the tv and was wondering has anyone come across an alternative to the standard UPC boxes supplied? They are quite large and would be great to get something say the size of a modem or so. appreciate any feedback.

    cheers

What type of box do you currently have?

The old digital box (I think it was the Chorus one) used to be pretty small, about the size of a modem, but I dont think they do them any more. The only boxes that work with UPC are the ones they provide so youre restricted in what you can get Im afraid.

The standard box as you call it has a PC desktop disk drive to record programmes, this means that the box has to be a certain size to accommodate the disk and there's probably a fan as well to keep the air circulating, all of which restricts the scope for miniaturization.

Even the standard boxes have a recording facility?I haven't subscribed to record programmes or anything so I believe its just the bog standard one. I was looking for the brand name on it but it just has upc mediabox. I think these were made by Pace at some stage.

Is a magic eye the best way to go?I do have a cupboard where I could store the box but it does mean channeling av cables etc to it.

OP are you ex-NTL or ex-Chorus? If you're ex-NTL you might be able to ask UPC for an old NTL Pace box, some of them are pretty compact and a lot smaller than UPC's current kit.

There is a new non-DVR HD box which is quite neat only a bit bigger than the pace DC221KN.
