Why don't you have a try yourself? You'll get help from the forum here. Depending on the version of firmware it's on it might be simple.

do i need 2 have an american sim card to unlock it or can it be done without?

There are two processes needed. Jailbreak then unlock. If you don't have the sim it's not a problem. As part of the jailbreak process you can activate the iPhone without the correct carrier sim.

What version is the iPhone at now? If it is anything less than 4.1 you can both jailbreak then unlock in about 10 minutes. If it is higher than 4.1 then it cannot currently be unlocked.

You need to jailbreak first then unlock, jailbreak gives you the ability to unlock.

sounds like you are probably better off going to a unlocking shop and get them to do it for you they will charge you about 40 euro. try anywhere around the capel st area

Ok, get limera1n from limera1n.com and run it, follow instructions. This will try to jailbreak and I am suggesting this first as it jailbreaks all devices prior to 4.1.

Do not bring it to an unlocking shop. All they will do is exactly what hshortt is explaining to you now, that you can do yourself for free.

Ah I see... Run TinyUmbrella with your iPhone connected to PC, that should tell you the version it's on?

Run limera1n as an administrator, or in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3. (assuming you are on Vista on Win7)

Yeah it should, make sure the iPhone is powered on.

Put it in DFU mode and then try connecting to either program.

    Try this:

    1. Power device off

    2. Hold power button for 3 seconds

    3. Without releasing power button, hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds

    4. Release the power button but keep the home button held until iTunes "detects an iPhone in recovery mode"

iTunes says that for both recovery and DFU mode. You know it's DFU mode when the screen is black.

have the phone in dfu mode but neither of the 2 programmes seem to be detecting the phone, think im gona give up and go to one of the shops that will unlock it for me, thanks for the help anyway guys.

Again, an unlocking shop will do the exact same thing you can do for free. If you update after they unlock it you will still lose the unlock.

Have you tried a different USB port or a different computer?

just an update,, got the phone unlocked in a shop at the corner of parnell st and malbourogh st,(€25) at first the guy said it would only take 20min to do, I ended up having to leave it with him for the day,He said he never had a iphone that was as difficult to unlock,:D

Did they just jailbreak and unlock it for you or did they unlock it properly?

I had an iPhone which had been unlocked but I managed to press restore last week and got locked out.

I just carried out the Jailbreak on it, Any chance you could explain how to unlock it?

    Thanks in advance :)

I don't know.. I can only access it as for emergency calls.

It saying to insert a valid pin with no pin lock to activate the phone but I don't have the original sim so I can't.

Is there any other way I can find out with out going through settings etc?
