Just curious as I started running and entering events after I moved to the USA. What are the fun things you like to pick up when entering a race? Entry fees for 5ks are typically no more than $25 and half marathon or marathons are around $50-70. You get your bib number and race shirt (my closet is slowly filling up with these!). Many races give you a pretty decent finishers medal or plenty of age group awards (top 3 in each).

Of course there is the massive amounts of food provided afterwards, normally donated by the local community stores. There is always loads left over. I normally stock up on my protein bars and drinks to keep me going for a while when I'm done. :o

My medal from my first Marathon offered absolutely zero satisfaction, just an additional item to carry home as I stumbled like a drunk playing Twister!

I did a 10 mile in Virginia beach a couple of weeks ago and everyone got Bells in the goodie bag. 5000 people running along Virginia Beach promenade with bells attached to their trainers was quite a sound!
