    Heya,
I was just wondering, from anybody doin the Journalism course in DCU, whether it was any good or not? Because I missed the open day, and now Im really confused. Would it be anyway possible to get a job in music journalism after doing the course?

I was up at the open day for communications, and they went through the journalism course, it looks pretty epic. Like i actually almost considered swapping course's. They had a few students talking about it and it looks pretty intense but practical. You get good work expr. out of it and they seem to have pretty good connections with a lot of media places.

Hi, I'm in my final year in Journalism. The course is OK, but has a lot of flaws. It actually has very few writing modules, but if you get involved with the college newspaper that can help. You also do TV, Radio and design modules, but there's a lot of theory at the moment in it which isn't very relevant.

You won't get a job in Ireland in music journalism unless you are VERY good. You don't need a degree to be a journalist (but I think it helps).

Don't go into this course hoping for a job unless you are prepared to put in untold hours of work. If you doss around, you just won't get a job at the end.

Hope I've helped, and feel free to PM me.

Hey! I'm a first year doing the Journalism degree, almost finished semester one :D So far i have really enjoyed the course, a good range of subjects too. I think we have about 13/14 lecturing hours a week which isnt much but the work you do outside class takes up a lot of time. If you dont put in the work, you wont pass. The College View, DCUFM and the tv work is great to get into as an extra bit to get more experience in writing, and getting used to radio and tv.

As thusspakeblixa said, we havent actually done a lot of writing yet but more learning the processes of it. It's a really enjoyable course so far. Any questions, fell free to PM too.

It's a great course if you get involved. I'm in second year at the minute and it's true there's a lot of theory modules that are of questionable need, but I found the writing and radio modules really helpful so far, as well as design.

What's really good about it though is the ease of access to college media. Stuff like the College View (student newspaper) and DCUfm are open to anyone from any faculty, but journalism students get much more notice and information and opportunities, with the paper in particular; and naturally enough, it's because we're journalists.

I'd highly recommend it, but to get the full experience, get involved in college media straight away - there'll be plenty of opportunities at the start of every year.

Music journalism is unfortunately almost impossible to get into. I've known about eight years of graduates and a lot of them would have wanted to do it. in the end, one does it but then has her real job too. in this country at least, there's only about five full-timers so it's tough
