Odor comes and goes?

    Hey people,

Need some help here. We have being getting this 'odor' that comes and goes in our house that smells like paraffin diesel, next door neighbour's (semi-detached) use oil heating but we don't. It's strange because it mighten be there for weeks or months then all of sudden the house would smell soo strong you would need to open doors and windows. We don't have much dealings with the neighbour in question based on reputation and I don't like to point the finger of blame until I have good back up that it is coming from next door and am not sure which way to go about this so would rather resolve in the most peaceful means, something isn't right though and at the end of the day we have to live here too.
Any suggestions much appreciative on where to start without sounding like am making a big deal of it but maybe many of you reading this might have experienced something similiar?

    Thanks,
    Francie

Is this happening after an oil delivery?

Sometimes those guys spill oil on the side of the tank when
    removing the nozzle.

There may also be a smell if he is dipping the tank to check
    how much oil is remaining.

There could also be a possibility that the wind is blowing the
exhaust fumes back towards your house ?

    Hi there,

Thanks for your reply. I pointed out all the things you mentioned there which could well be the simple cause of it but just to through some light on it we never see an oil tanker there I seen him filling it one day in drums so could be a case thats he's spilling it or checking the level. The tank is actually adjacent to our boundary so would you think its too close to the proximity of our house hence a bad position on installation?

Any possibility the smell is coming back up from your drains - is the smell when you find it in your house stronger in the areas of the bathroom or kitchen ?

In relation to location of the tank I dont think there are any rules - which is not good.

It all seems to be clicking together yeah it starts coming strong from the kitchen, I must also mention that we got an extra extension bedroom built in 2005 (with the help of a grant) at the rear for the mother which was organised through my cousin who had knowhow through years in the building industry now one of the things thats playing on my mind is that he did build over the manhole which normally should be rerouted hence having access, could this come into play I wonder?
I think your right about the tank because the technician from the environment that I had called out before about the problem said likewise.
