Thinking of ditching my telly - opinions?

    Hey folks,
I'm thinking of getting rid of the television, and just using a PC and large monitor. I don't want to pay the television licence any more, and the multimedia drive doesn't play HD files, so that's been made obsolete as a player. I'm thinking of just installing XBMC on an old tower, and sourcing a large monitor.

That said, all the monitors I can find above twenty two inches are wild expensive. Am I missing something, or is this really the way things are?

I'm still looking second hand, but are there any other set up options I can go for that I'm not thinking of?

You do not require a television licence to watch television on your computer or mobile phone. However, you do require a licence if the computer is used together with any other apparatus to receive a signal.

Are you thinking about using freesat/freeview/saorview boxes with your setup? If so you will still need a license.

No, I won't be putting a tv card in at all. It's just for watching downloaded stuff.

Didn't the law change in the Broadcasting Act of last year? Someone please clarify

    It went something like:
Anything capable of showing the Rte iPlayer is deemed to be licencable, with a little clause in there that states that in future it'll not just be the responsibility of An Post, but Isp's could be responsible for collecting revenue in future, opening the door to another stealth tax on broadband

Jesus, are you serious? That includes everything from a gaming tower to a netbook to a smartphone or even a bloody ipod.

I can't see it happening though, I doubt UPC'll play ball, judging from the way they're dealing with IRMA at the moment.
But whatever it is, it's not in force yet.

Wouldnt that mean you'd need a TV License for your car as well then :)

    With Mobile Broadband etc :)

A TV license is not required for internet broadcast like RTE player. See watty's post here, the sixth post - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=67390917#post67390917.

A license is only required if your Monitor/PC has the capabilities of receiving a TV signal from a Satellite, Aerial or cable etc. Ask over in the broadcasting section if you want confirmation.
