Maxol to phase out sale of E85 fuel

Couldn't find this posted already, sorry if it has been.
Oil company Maxol says it is phasing out the sale of the ethanol-based E85 motor fuel.

It says it has made the decision because the duty derogation on the fuel runs out at the end of this year. Maxol will start phasing out the marketing of this fuel from January 1 2011.

The company said that, as a result of the Government incentive's coming to an end, E85 will become significantly more expensive at the pump than normal unleaded petrol. It added that the 'already extremely modest' demand would inevitably disappear.

Shame to see the Government incentive end.

    I hope you're talking about E5

    Oops....

Actually was behind an 07 focus ffv today and was thinking how unsellable a 1.8 petrol lx would be and how misguided the incentives for buying these cars are when there's nobody using ethanol in them.

I wonder if we will see the Ethanol 10 (E10) fuel coming to our shores anytime soon. It has been on sale in other countries as E10 91RON at 10cpl below 91RON fuels.

Although our own fuel is 98RON (yes we all pay premium, no choice), is it really true that the ethanol additive is more expensive p/l than the 98RON it's mixed with?

Well , It look like I be no longer a Maxol Customer. There unleaded prices around me have been historically higher than other leading suppliers. The only thing they had got going until recently was E85, until the recent (months) hikes in prices which made E85 less financially viable. This will Kill Flexi-car motors car sales in this country. Looks like, I be disconnecting my E85 Kit. It been giving a little trouble from time to time when starting the car.

Petrol is typically 95 RON in Ireland, 98 RON was the uncommon "super unleaded", although some E5 claims to 98 RON or higher...

I think this is a great loss - the E85 Maxol that sold was a great idea as it was (i) making use of a waste product and (ii) something actually produced in this country. Unfortunately there is a real lack of knowledge of alternative fuels and FFVs in this country, maybe if it sold better they would have been able to keep prices down?

...maybe it would have sold better if the price was better ??

It's all down to money: proof, to me, that any so-called 'Green' initiative unless it stacks up on monetary savings, is doomed. You can't eat 'goodwill', and people won't pay extra to be green.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Most fuel in Ireland - bar Maxol E5 - is only sold as being 95RON. Some is 99.2 from Whitegate and the rest is a mix of any and all kinds refined abroad...

As goes E10 - probably not, but E7 seems likely as distributors have told station owners to make sure their tanks and pumps can take it.

The only flexifuel car that sells in this country is the 1.2 clio on scrappage.

That incorrect, Ford was selling a version of Focus as a flexi-fuel version was promoted when Maxol launch E85.

Before emissions based VRT and Road Tax, it was offered, but not any longer.

Volvo sold a load of Flexi-Fuels when there was a 50% VRT rebate on them. Since it was cut (think it's still €2,500 max) the sales went right down and since the introduction of Emissions based VRT and tax, they've had to give huge discounts to get rid of stuff that was in stock with Petrol engines.

    Bleh! What a complete shame

I used to buy this stuff for some petrol powered equipment. Had a shredder, generator running off the stuff with no modification. They ran better than on ordinary petrol and the fumes smelled like booze

Now i want to stock up while they still have it but they say water gets into it when you store it for long

The end of the low excise rate is just the government making sure nobody escapes the new higher fuel prices.

It makes the Greens look anti green to allow this to happen when Fossil fuels are now the only shop in town for petrol Engines since Electric Vehicles will take 10+ to be come affordable and easily charged quickly.

    It is a shame
And shame as well that no cheap LPG here

This is indeed a shame but it just goes to show you how little they really care about cleaner fuels while they hockey us with carbon taxes yet take away the cleaner alternative .

Also, whatever tax (if any) they were getting from the sale of this stuff will now disappear as they go and take the greedy swipe at it .

I wonder if many jobs will be lost due to lack of production of ethanol or maybe it will just be used to add to petrol to sell as E5 anyway which may help.

I always reckoned that my Ford Focus FFV seemed to have a bit more power on the E85. Not much and I only say this because I know my car well after nearly 4 years by now ;).

My other beef with this was the fact that you should (at least in theory) never have any issues getting a car through the NCT on emissions with this stuff but now it will probably not be there by the time I will be getting mine tested next year although I am not too worried as it still has less than 70K KM done.

It will be worth feck all whenever I go to sell her on now though :(.

I seriously doubt it. The ethanol used to make E85 in Whitegate is an industrial by-product from making cheese and will likely just be used to reduce imports of ethanol for E5.

although some E5 claims to 98 RON or higher...

Seems to be too, I'll get an engine light at full throttle with any other fuel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 773 ✭✭✭D_murph

Yeah, that's what I was thinking all right. Still a shame to see the end of E85 as an alternative fuel here though :(. It never really got much of a chance IMO.

Not many garages were selling the stuff because very few people drove the cars that ran on it and then, people were less likely to buy the cars as there was no garages selling it near them. Chicken and the egg thing..

I was lucky enough to have 2 maxol garages in Cork near enough to me that were selling it alright. One in Wilton and the other in Tivoli.

Not for long more now it seems.

What Colm meant was that its the only one that sells in numbers, not that its the only one available.

Either way, they were'nt selling because people wanted flexifuel cars, it's just that the 1.2 petrol Clio happens to be flexifuel while being the cheapest option engine wise. They dont have a petrol alternative.
