I wouldn't bother with the non turbo 1.8, its slow enough, requires cambelts pretty regularly (40k) and has short gearing.

    The 1.8t is actually a 2.0

My advice is get one with a main scab dealer history. If the wrong oil is used its not good.
Plenty other issues with them, honest john etc would have lists of faults.

I'd look in the uk as chances of finding a properly maintained one are better.

If you're going diesel then fiats excellent multijet 1.9 is streets ahead of the older 2.2 Isuzu unit which is rough, not that economical and saleproof because of the tax.

I remember seeing a lot of turbo petrols building up sludge in the sump and turbo pipe. Think wrong oil is the cause.

Got locked into a 93 years ago when the key dropped its code. Check both keys unlock and start the car.

Another titbit, the basic audio system is shocking so get one with proper speakers, some only have tiny ones in the dash.

It may be the 95 I'm thinking of but i've come across some scabs with dead pixels on the lcd display, expensive to sort I believe

The sludge issue does not affect the NG 9-3 which only ever used GM petrol engines. 9-5 and OG 9-3 suffered from sludge issue caused by inefficient engine breather design combined with too long oil drain intervals. Also, the issue on 9-5 was fixed from MY04 models. They continued to use a SAAB engine until the end of OG 9-5 earlier this year.
