Getting back into things - Advice

    Hi all,

So in August of this year I got really really ill, went into hospital blah blah blah and had to stop running for a while to let my body recoop. I was training for the Dublin Marathon before I got sick and had been running around 30k a week.

So thanks to Doctor's orders I did not put foot to pavement for the last 5 months. I have been doing yoga twice weekly to keep my muscle tone and flexibility.

I really want to start training in the new year, as my Doctor says it's ok. I wanted to ask should I be doing something akin to the couch to 5k program to get back up to fitness or is there something out there that is more suitable for people coming back to running after illness?

I probably haven't looked hard enough but any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

    Hi Netanya,
I'd suggest first of all having two or three easy runs just to see how you feel. What you do after that depends on where you gauge your present running fitness to be.

C25k is really designed for those starting out in running - to learn the very basics and to keep it do-able. Wherever your fitness level is you're probably beyond starting all over.

If, after those early runs, you feel up for it then set yourself (or find) a progressive programme with an attainable goal. It'll all become clearer once you hit the road again.

    Good luck.
