Its listed as 'Long Distance' I presume its IM range distance as Swinford, Lost Sheep and Half Ireman are listed as Middle Distance. TriAthy Double Olympic is also listed as Long Distance

The link from the TI website is to www.ironman.ie which is dead link. This would suggest a IM distance race which could be good thing for the irish race calander. The use of the ironman name in the weblink could be a bad sign though as it indicates the organisers lack of understanding about the brand and how zealously WTC protect the brand-name. I'd be interested to see on what basis TI sanctioned the race.

An IM in Ireland? in Irish weather? on Irish roads? with irish levels of support? emmmm

The latest event details plus the new website www.hardman.ie (which is not live), plus the organisers mobile are on the Irish Triathlon Calendar here.

Note: I'm in no way connected to this race, I've never met the organiser, etc. I just collect and publish info about all the Triathlons in Ireland.

The big plus in having a well run IM distance race in Ireland is the cost factor. It'll be lot cheaper to do this than an IM abroad which can be expensive.

Edit: I see the link has changed from ironman.ie to hardman.ie

Looks good - and a very reasonable entry fee is it too good to be true??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭griffin100

Anyone know who the orgainsers of this are? (I will contact the named individual on the site but wanted to check here first).

I had planned on being in Kerry on holidays with the kids that week so it does look tempting as long day out. Dont know about numbers though, Groomsport only gets half a dozen or so for its IM distance race.

It all depends on the Weather.....

Surely 'ironmen' aren't worried by a bit of rain?

I think it's great to see this.
I'm not going to compete as I've already signed up for Galway the following week.
Well that and I'm not sure I'm ready for the big leap up.
I heard talk of this last year in Kerry, some of the Dundag Swimmers were talking about organising something along the lines of this, so it might be locals behind it.
I had a look on the website and it's good to see that they have gone to the bother of putting the race documents up for everyone to see before they hit the button.
I had to email Galway to find out about cut-off times and they replied but the info is still not on their own website.
For a (currently) less well publicised event the organisation and available information is way more detailed (than other big name events). A real credit to them, and if the event works out well it should be a great day, the ring cycle is a test at the best of times, sending it through Kenmare great as well, more spectator friendly.
And it is "good value" too, actually I could cancel Galway and still have change from the refund...(mmmmm...no hotel needed either, wife won't be giving out when I bail for a few days...)
Swimming in the lakes is also something everyone should do, won't do your times any good but the views alone from water height are stunning. (at least that's my excuse for a slow 3km time).
I've no affiliation to the organisers but I'm glad that this is on the radar, one for the future if it's a regular occurrence.

    Bertie

I've been a triathlete for ten tears plus, but never done full distance . In the current economic climate I wont be able to afford to go abroad and race, with that in mind Ithink it's great to be able to race in such a beautifull part of the country , and be home the next day ! ..I'm In !!

    Hi all,
My name is Alan Ryan, i am the contact listed on the contacts page of our website, www.hardman.ie
I just wanted to answer acouple of your concerns.
we are a couple of local guys with much experience, locally, nationally and internationally in sport event management. We have the support of and the cooperation of the various local groups, sports clubs, hotel, chambers of commerce and tourism and indeed as one poster mentioned the Dundag masters swim club.
We have been planning this event for some time and as you can appreciate it took a lot of effort to coordinate and receive the approval of the various interested parties.
We firmly believe that no other triathlon can offer as spectacular a setting as killarney. To swim in the lakes, cycle the ring of Kerry and then run through the national parks is something most triathletes can only dream of.
We are aware that the Ironman 70.3 event is taking place shortly after but at the end of the day it is still only the half distance.
We would hope to get a good entry for the event. The location, convenience, cost and guaranteed hospitality make it a very attractive race and one which will build over the coming years into a much talked about event.
We cannot guarantee the weather will be good but can guarantee a fun, safe, well organised, spectacular event. We also cannot guarantee the 3 Healy-Raes will enter as a team but would never say never.
we need as much support as we can get from the Irish triathlon community and look forward to seeing you all in August.
Please contact me directly if you have any other questions,
    Alan Ryan-087-6259892

Thanks for the update Alan. It's good to see an event like that happening so close to home. I'm tempted to do this (not all of us have to have pancake flat IM's with big crowds and good weather;)) but would like to know how many entrants are you hoping for. I wouldn't be keen if there were only a very small number - like the Groomport IM when only a handfull of competitors turn up. Would you consider putting up a monthy update on the website of the numbers registered?

    Tis back up now.

Hi guys, sorry for not getting back earlier but had just seen the posts now. You were wondering why the site was down. From what i can understand from our webman, and he speaks a language i don't comprehend, is that he noticed some unusual activity on the his server. As he also maintains the site for the ras mumhan which takes place this weekend he felt it safer to take them down and then reformat them all somewhere else, or something like that. Does that make any sense because it's all way over my head. Anyway, the site is back up and running. Entries are coming in. The triathlon220 magazine will have an article about the race on may the 3rd. There has been a lot of interest from the UK market, as it is a bank holiday there that weekend. All in all it's all shaping up to be a great weekend here in killarney. Any other questions feel free to mail me through the site or call me on 087 6259892.
    Later, Alan

Just bumping this up... got a mad notion and entered this! I'm not well in the head. Any other newbies to the IM distance heading to Killarney next week??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭griffin100

I'm doing it. Heading down to Kerry next week for a few days with the family and really looking forward to it. This'll be IM no. 2.

A bit concerned that there's been no communication at all from the organisers and no updates to website so contacted them last week and they confirmed race is still going ahead albeit with a slightly changed run route.

Latest weather forcast looks sh!te for the day, but it keeps changing......fingers crossed.

Up date on the website on Tuesday mentions some of those taking part. Surprised that no mention is made of the former pro cyclist and Ras winner thats taking tackling the entire event. Best of luck to all taking part this weekend.

I'll put a race report up on my training log when I get back to work, I'm not doing an IM race report on my phone!

In brief, tough swim in a fantastic location, great bike course and a nice off road lapped run route. One or two minor issues but to be expected in the first year, nothing that affected the day overall. Hopefully there'll be more than 25 finishers next year!

well done again Griff, look forward to reading the full report....

25 finishers is good. Only 12 finished the very first Ironman in Hawaii. This could be the start of something great! Look forward to the reports.

Edit: Just looked at the results and of the 25 finishers 9 were relay teams so really only 16 completed the full course.

Cheers Derek, I'm thinking of retiring from IM on the strength of that result ;)

Long race report in my log.

A race that deserves to become a staple on the race calendar.

Very good event. As said a couple of teething problems but nothing to take away from the day or that could not be sorted for next year. Could certainly sustain a bigger field as I was surprised how little traffic there was all around the ring, only picked up a bit of a convoy coming off Ladys View.
