I've been told that even though I have 30% of the tatal grade from the course work that if I don't pass (get 40% of) the exam then I fail the module. Is this true? I figured I would just have to make up the remaining % by getting about 20% in the exam.

If you've been told in lectures or if it says so in the module description that you need to pass the exam to pass the module, then you need your 40% in the exam. Otherwise, 40% for the whole module will get you a pass.
