Before the torches are lit and pitchforks sharpened, let me add something the OP decided to omit; These bonuses were paid to only a SELECT FEW people within the public service, not all of them.

This is true but it still does not make it right..I was quite vocal on here about how crazy it was to be paying AIB their bonuses...but as I see it 90 people in the DOF are included in those getting bonuses...Lenny has some set of nuts on him...This cant happen

    This is crazy
When the public sector pay was cut did lenihan not reverse the cut for higher paid public sector because there bonus payment was done away with???

    he did indeed

again I must point out the level we are talking about...even the Indo says 'dozens'

the figures seem to cover differnet kinds of poayments which do not seem to be 'bonuses' as such

e.g. seems to include people who got some sort of gesture through a 'staff suggestion scheme'!!

    others
ex-gratia payments of €1,000 and €500 were also made to other officials in recognition of extra work.

being paid for work is hardly a bonus

    however
while the Department of Foreign Affairs said it made once off payments of €500 each to 29 retiring staff.

    this is mad stuff

    and
    "seniority allowances"

seriously that needs to be clarified

its beyond comical at this stage, our dept of finance have for years now been unable to accurately predict much if anything in relation to state tax revenues, balance of payments surpluses, forecasts of economic growth-despite having the relevent data & information.

only this week E&Y have predicted a retraction of over 2% next year in Ireland whereas those in the dept of finance (the guys who have all the facts at their finger tips) are claiming growth of over 2.7% per year for the next 4 years.

the dept of finance as a unit seem dreadful at doing their jobs, yet we're seeing 100 of them receive bonuses.

just 6 months ago E&Y predicted higher growth than that, things change in forecasting!!

they do more than economic forecasting!

in the space of 4 weeks there's a difference in over 4% between E&Y and dept of finance's forecasts.

this state has entered into long term IMF loans based on economic growth forecasts by the dept of finance, they might do other tasks but right now their forecasts need to be accurate or else we'll be knocking on the IMF's door again or defaulting on loans & in the process losing futher international credability.

Telling the US that we would never have to bail out the Banks and ignoring their warning that they were too optimistic. Yes they should definitely get their bonus payments.

And the bank guarantee that they have given to the banks, has work fantastically well! They probably used their wonderful forecasting model then too, to figure that sure it would be grand!

What else to they do? maybe look at how the economy is growing? spotting bubbles? managing risk? protecting the economy of Ireland? Do they really deserve their bonus payments?

Or is it a case of the FF giving they a nice handshake before they leave office just to make sure they know who's their daddy!
