normally your phone will notify you for the new update, its all depends on you carrier if they approve the update, and if you have unbranded phone even the better. Try from the phone to go to settings ->about phone ->system software updates

    check now!!

HTC don't have plans to release 2.2 for Android.

If you want it you will have to root your phone (plenty of online guides), and then flash a custom ROM such as Froydvillain, Floyo, or Elelinux. I am currently using CyanogenMod 6.1 which is pretty good.

It's important to be aware of what you will and won't have. You will get Apps2SD, but this is available on Custom 2.1 ROMs as well. You won't be able to use Flash 10.1, and you will lose HTC Sense, and HTC Applications, including there widgets.

All in all though 2.2 is working pretty good for me and I'm finding the phone pretty fast with slightly better battery life.

Have to ask, if updating to 2.2 means hero users lose all this, then whats to be gained?

I was never pushed about flash on the phone (it's overrated), and there are far better launchers than Sense out there (I had Launcherpro Plus on my hero, and I'm still using it on my Desire HD).

Roboshatner - you need to first root your phone (if you haven't already), and then follow instructions to put a new ROM on yourself. Its a manual process, but its not too bad and pretty easy to do.

Heres the platform highlights of 2.2

    http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html

Bear in mind that portable hotspot is not available on the hero.

Cant see any reason to update myself. Maybe the performance improvements? im guessing these arent overly dramatic.

I agree, the main bonus is probably that you will have more apps available to you, the phone is faster, and the battery life improves. You can also tether, and use your phone as a wifi hotspot, which has been quite handy a couple of times -but I don't use it regularly. I don't think the gmail update is available to phones below 2.2, I use ADW launcher, which is quite good, I have beautiful widgets for Clock/Weather, Blik calendar as a calendar widget, Dialer One as dialer, Swype instead of HTC keyboard, and I don't care much for the rest of the Sense stuff. The only thing that I miss is that Contacts doesn't sync facebook profile photos which I think is a nice feature.

I've used it, but now that I think about it with a 3rd party app, if you root your phone you can use it in 2.1 with anetshare.

far as I know its already been unlocked.

Backed up sim numbers on sd card.

sorry I have realized I have not a clue what Im doing.

right I will start with http://theunlockr.com/category/howto...ro-g2-how-tos/ this and work from there

Yes, rooting is different to unlocking. There are some good articles floating about on the pros/cons for rooting. The main thing is to be aware that applications you install can potentially have much deeper access to your phone, and use that access to do nasty things, so read those permissions before installing anything :)

Root the phone and install CyanogenMod 6.1, an official version of which is now available for Hero. That's the ROM I'm currently using.

After the default install, I changed the launcher to LauncherPro, and changed the kernel to an overclocked FlyKernel.

I've been using Android 2.2, in various forms, since August and it's been great :)

i downloaded a great rom for my hero the last day, Its a Sense Froyo rom :D
You get 2.2 plus Flash player plus sense. Only downside is that the camera doesnt work at the minute, but this problem is to be fixed shortly. Heres the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838730

I rooted it lads now Im stuck with the back up part

Not sure exactly where you're stuck. I have Amon Recovery. Boot into recovery by holding the home key when you switch it on. Then select Backup/Restore and then select full Nandroid Backup, it takes about 30seconds (and saves to the SD). Then wipe the device and cache, and flash the new ROM from the SD card.

I rooted the phone that was easy.

Now the guide it telling me I have to back up the system to be totally honest I don't want to back it up all I want to do is install 2.2

Can I install 2.2 without having to back it up with clockwork recovery or amon ra back up parts in the guide its very complicated the back up parts.

I got one of them install the rom manager part but the program to back it up would not work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Zagato

I would not recommend flashing anything new without doing a full backup, as if the firmware you try to install does not work, you will have nothing to revert to.
Afraid I have never used the Clockwork recovery so couldn't advise you about it

i managed to root it back it up and download 2.2 now Im stuck on this bit

    http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/12/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-android-phone-after-any-one-click-root-methods/
    6. Open ROM Manager and click on Reboot Recovery. ( I click this noting happens)

    7. Once in the custom recovery image, do a Nandroid backup.
    8. Once the backup is done, click Wipe Data / Factory Reset.
    9. Once the wipe is complete, select flash .zip from sd card and flash the ROM you put on the sd card.

Right lads happy crimbo I updated it too 2.2 cyno

I was panicing and I installed 2.2 and forgot to update my phone using the recovery mode.

So it started up and it just kept showing me the logo noting more.

So I thought feck I messed up my phone and forgot to update it.

I so took a few hours to calm down and checked the guides and forgot before installed the update I also forgot to (wipe the device and cache)

so did that and well I have 2.2 now oh yeah to be honest the guides that I followed didn't work that well.

So what I did was take from different guides and got it installed I know I made mistakes and won't make the same mistake twice going to download the 2.1 firmware just if I want to go back to 2.1
