I have been looking on donedeal, carzone and adverts.ie for the last 2-3 months for a decent Automatic with no joy.

Every one iv gone to look at has had issues.

I'm primarily looking at 4wd diesel Toyota Estima /Previa's
problems with the ones iv looked at
    blown turbo,head gasket gone,gearbox shagged
    some i wouldn't even pay 100 for

i was also looking at diesel SWB pajero's
again i found allot to be very very rough some with gasket issues or shagged gearbox/4wd

iv looked at other cars but they all seam to have not been looked after at all.

i got a 91 1.5 manual corolla last march for €150 [no NCT or tax]
spent some money to fix a smashed fly window and some other small bits.got a NCT on it and taxed it.
Only just sold it to a friend for €400 as he needed a car ASAP and i was already looking to pick up something bigger/newer.

Is there just no decent automatics out there in this price range ?

You're aiming too high by the sounds of it. A regular petrol automatic car could be had within budget.

An automatic pajero will struggle to do 20mpg so don't be buying diesel on fuel economy grounds.

Well the currant daily driver costs at least 9K a year to tax, insure and fill with petrol
so looking for something better to use for 6 months of the year Oct-march

i think its just the fact some people are unrealistic with what there car is worth. i would say my cars worth about 5K but i know realistically i would only get 1500 at best for it if i wanted to sell it.

i went to look at a 2.2 estima a while back for 950
    sunroof motor was broke
    turbo was shagged
    suspected head gasket/cylinder head issues
    broken radio
    3 very bald tyres
interior was full of stains and marks
dash had lumps taken out of it

i asked was the seller open to offers and he said no so i walked away

    Wow,

My 98 GS300 (3.0 petrol, automatic) cost me €4,500 for the last 12 months. That INCLUDES insurance, tax, petrol, servicing, basically everything (12k miles).

If you include depreciation, It cost me about €5k for the year:D Its probably worth max €1500 now!

plenty of older auto diesels about to come onto the market due to the 9 year rule. Should pick up an ex taxi for within budget.

    Tax = €932
    Insure - €1300 FC
rest is petrol [16-21mpg and €90ish a fill]

1100 asking, maybe you'll get it for 900 euro?

Could be in bits, but worth a look.
