Not sure on the MK5 but the MKIV was a biatch changing them, I would use a flat nose pliers to take the old one out and fit the new one.

Whats in the way? Can you not do a bit of light dismantling to get at it? Often, airbox can be in the way but should be easy to move.

One of the front parking bulbs in my MK V Golf occasionally claims to be busted but I know that it's a loose connection because the warning light comes and goes. I've tried loads of times to get at it to remount it but to no avail. The owner's manual implies that it is not a user serviceable part i.e. you have to go to a garage to get it looked at.

I have a mark IV and the bulb was close to impossible to remove until someone showed me the knack of doing it. For this one the clip looked like it rotated forwards but it needed a slight lift to release it which you honestly couldn't see. Could be something like that, may need a little wiggle? I've never seen a mark 5 one but could be similar, just putting it out there in case.
