    Hi

Im currently on Meteor bill pay lite for 30 a month and considering changing to the 3 offer - Classic Flex Max plan for 40 per month plus get the iPhone 4 for 219 on 24 month contract. I've heard alot about the iPhone 3 & 4, both good and bad, so can anyone tell me which really is better and if the problems with iPhone 4 really are that bad or is it a very small percentage that have problems. I know some people who've went back to the iPhone 3 after having the 4 as they didnt find it as good. Also whats the difference between iPhone 3 and 3GS? Or is there a difference?

One last thing, 3 as a provider - good, bad, brilliant, terrible...?

    Thank you! smile.gif

Not a massive jump from 3Gs to 4, but I went from a 3G to a 4, and the difference was huge. I love it to bits, it really ticks all boxes for me.
There is a massive thread on here about Three already, and some disparaging ones on the Three Board:

Personally I find their Tech Support in India woefully inadequate although very helpful. The service is fine for me, all over the country, and the rates are great.Pisser having to pay for voicemail though.

When you say not a massive jump from 3GS to 4, how bout from a Nokia 6300 to an iPhone 4? :o:D

I'm a complete beginner to the whole iPhone craze! Basically just want to know which one to go for, I've nothing to compare it with so I guess I'll be happy with either or!:confused:

Hmm never seen that bit bout paying for VM...

It says on the Classic Flex Max plan for 40 p/m that you get an extra 2GB, do you think its a good deal?

If you pay 40 a month and 219 for the phone, is it not a 18 month contract? I thought it was only for the trade in offer you had a 24 month contract?

being honest, i jumped from a 3G S to a 4 and I've noticed a huge difference. some will probably call me crazy, but the extra 200mhz in the processor and the doubling of RAM makes the phone so much more snappier.

going back to a 3G S now is like watching paint dry in comparison to a 4.

For me, going to the iPhone 4/4.2 was fantastic from the iP3/4.2

I suspect in your query that some who went back to the iP3 did so for jail breaking reasons, as the iP4 is a considerable upgrade in every way.

As Steve Jobbs forces design over function the IPhone will ALWAYS be a compromise, it could be great but it can't be great and lok the way it is, that's the argument.

iPhone needs a LOT of support form your provider. So far no provider has stepped up to the mark in supporting the iPhone and if O2 are anything to go by, they are seemingly actively discouraging iPhone subscriptions, I closed my account with them, leaving two years and a 'silver' upgrade behind, it was cheaper for me to be a NEW customer and as 3 were the only people with stock if iPhone 4 [possibly even into early 2011 before others get adequate stocks???] I went with them, 3 don't have a good track record though ~ so far for me so good, in fact I'm getting better performance than when I was on O2 ~ but as the actual phone cannot be compared ~ why this is the case cannot be confirmed.

So, iP4/4.2 over the iP3G/4.2 yes, yes, yes. No Question go for it.

Second part is your provider. I can't comment on Meteor.

I'm thinking of moving from Metoer to 3 too, but I'd need to get herself onto 3 prepay. There's no way I'm gonna do that though, since we've free Meteor-to-Meteor calls to each other at the minute, and her 3 to 3 calls will be 35c per minute!

Best of both? €25 pm and free 3 to 3 calls?

No stock? Really? My mate got one in Tallaght the other day for O2, and another mate got one on vodafone... one of the two phone was a 32gb, other a 16gb (don't know which was which)

    Forgot about best of both!
There's actually a BOB15, and that gives free 3 to 3 calls too! I think we'll go for that one!

    Thanks very much.

There are a few long technical articles in google explaining why iPhone has not been a commercial success for the networks.

As a Phone, the iPhone is a weak receptor, an extendible antenna would most likely cure most of that issue but contention becomes a big problem for networks as more iPhones join the existing systems.

So the back end has to be reinforced at a cost to the networks that is not reflected in revenues.

Apple for instance get all the money from the iTunes & App sales even though the network has to provide the transport protocols and infrastructure.

Always on internet and the adoption of mobile platforms for primary use has added more problems globally and the iPhone's technology is not as scalable or robust nor does it port well.

It all adds up to a bit of a loose canon, it's a total nightmare for networks and a total magnet for customers. So what do you do as a network operator?

    to OP:

I had a 3GS for about a year, and upgraded to an iPhone 4 a few days ago.

I have to admit, the leap in terms of sharper resolution, better camera and slightly faster cpu is big, but not ground breaking. Having said that, when you spend a few days on the 4, the 3GS does look very pixelated by comparison.

The apps all work the same, so if money is an issue and you're not bothered about the better resolution, the 3GS will do the job just as well for you. I believe it's the apps that make it such a great device, and they're just as good on 3GS.

For me, the reason why I'd now choose the 4 over the 3GS any day is the front facing camera. That sealed the deal for me. Without that, I don't think I'd have bothered upgrading. But after seeing FaceTime working last week end, I was hooked. Far sharper resolution than my experience with skype, and no audio break-up, even on a call to an iPhone 4 in Canada.

So if you have the money for it, you'd be mad not to go for the 4, but if that's an issue for you and you can live without FaceTime, the 3GS will do you just as well.

Either on eis a great piece of kit, and if you're like me you'll never go back to any other brand of phone after a play with an iPhone.

    Enjoy.

Is the reception any better with the 4 compared to 3GS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,408 ✭✭✭naasrd

I hooked up with friends for lunch last week, all have 3GS, I've gotten so used to the speed on the 4 and resolution, pages were loading on mine much faster.

Personally I haven't had any experience of the 4 dropping calls, except in areas where the 3GS dropped them too. So IMO, there is no issue with reception on the 4

It's just that the 4 was touted by Apple to be better reception wise than 3GS (I live in a dodgy reception area). Had a Nokia last week while waiting on insurance claim ... there is a big difference in reception I have to say - mind you, could never go back!! :)

Phonecover offered me iPhone 4 16gb for €150 (no contract and unlocked), and 32gb iphone 4 for €185 .... was very tempting to say the least

I had a lot of problems with my iPhone 4 dropping calls and really poor Internet access which was hugely improved once I received my official iPhone 4 Bumper.

    - In my opinion Apple were backed into a corner over their own design stupidity (form over function) and did the dishonourable thing by trying to dismiss it all and lie their way out of it.

In short, where I live and work (ie. signal strength) the iPhone 4 is can be practically unusable for calls and Internet access while held in your hand...... Unless you slap on a lump of plastic and rubber on in an ingenious retro fix.
