A4 Front Wheel Bearings

Hey lads...Goin to get the front wheel bearing replaced (as was recommended). Hoping to do the job myself and save a few quid! I've got a price from a motor factors and they've quoted me €63+vat for one particular make and €124+vat for the other model.
The difference being one is for cars with ABS and the other, cheaper one was for cars without ABS. Its a 2002 A4 that was first registered in October of that year. How will I know if I have ABS or not??

They checked a book in the shop and it said I had ABS, yet when they ran the reg. number through the computer it recommended the bearing for cars without ABS!

    Help please!:)

An 02 a4 would have ABS. I presume you have never had to do an emergency stop...you know for sure if you had!

    Nope thankfully!:D

Just find it strange that the reg. number would give a different opinion to the book?

The bearings (and hub I assume) seem quite expensive, shop around. Get a price from Otto or Gsf too

This is going to sound harsh but IMO, anyone driving who doesnt know if they have abs or not should not have a driving licence.
Similar would apply to people who dont know what wheels drive their car!

Drive the car to a quiet place on a few loose chips and stand on the brakes. You will soon find your answer.

Yes that is harsh, and not particularly helpful! But when you go to a motor factors and get two conflicting opinions on what part is suitable for your car, who am I to make a decision over these supposedly "knowledgeable" people??

If you turn on your ignition so the lights on the dash come on, if your car has ABS a yellow ABS light will come on and then go off when you start the car..

    + 1

OP How do you expect to find out? Especially in the weather we are going to be experiencing over the next few weeks with ice and snow forecast. And in case another thread is opened yes its normal for the brake pedal to vibrate when ABS kicks in!

If you have ever had to make an emergency stop with evasive action to avoid an obstacle in a car without ABS you would make it your business to find out if your car has it or not.
