Ipod Touch 2nd Generation Backlight

    Hi all,

My mum bought an Ipod for my sister from ebay but the backlight is not working. This had been in the description from the seller on ebay but she didn't check as to what this actually was. Turns out - it's fairly important :)

Just wondering does anybody know of a place where she can get the backlight repaired in Sligo/Mayo or Limerick/Clare at a reasonable cost. The cheapest quote we got was about €80 and we can't afford that.

All help/suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Nicfd

Do you mean the screen is dark and you can't read it? I have an iTouch 2G, check 'Settings', 'Brightness', it's usually best to set 'Auto Brightness' to On.

Hate to tell you but the iTouch doesn't have a separate backlight. Its the whole screen. As the poster said above, check if its turned on and do a full restore on iTunes. You could be looking at a bungled screen repair job sold on eBay.

On the upside, a replacement screen is as little as €40 depending on where you go.

I did not recommend a restore, what's the point in doing that if there's a h/w problem?

For the sake of 10 minutes, could you save you €40.

But it's not a s/w setting so a restore won't fix it, the seller even declared the fault when he sold them the device.

Just a suggestion. I know its 99% probably a hardware issue. But better to rule out everything first.

You don't work on an IT help desk by any chance? The solution to everything is Ctrl-Alt-Del.

I actually take that as an insult. Been tinkering away fixing these things on an ad hoc basis for years especially iPhones and iTouch's. Screens, Camera's, Batteries all done. I really enjoy it as a hobby but one thing I never do is leap to a conclusion. For the sake of 10 minutes and a free fix, do a restore. If it doesn't fix it, move along and see what else could be up. I often do it for friends at cost and more often than not a simple restore fixes it. If not, I order the part and go from there.

I wasn't for a moment suggesting the problem had to be software related. But why not at least try save yourself a few €'s by trying something thats free to do.

Anyway OP, if you want to contact me I'll recommend a few places (That for the record, I have no business or otherwise connection with) around Dublin that can have a look for you.
