The 1.4 hdi engine is fantastic. I have got over 85 mpg, and average 65.

The injector seals can go on some around 80,000 miles, but nothing else. Mine is on 180,000 km's now and running as good as it was when new.

    Timing belt is 150,000 miles

    You'd be quicker walking.

110 bhp in a 1.4dsl is not bad at all. same as your lower powered vw. dont think he was askin for smart arse comments anyway;)

You'll be passed by old biddies in their Tiidas, it's that slow.

The 1.4hdi is only around 75 bhp.

My father is on his second one now. Never had any trouble with either and he puts up fairly big mileage. They are very economical, he averages over 50mpg but they are slow (which is fine as economy his concern). Depends what you want op. If you want an economical car with some nice toys like automatic lights, wipers etc then they are a good choice, if you something with a bit of a kick you would want to be looking at the 1.6hdi at the least or at a different car altogether.

    That'd the 1.6 hdi (90 or 110) or the 2.0 hdi (also 90 or 110). The 1.4 in the 307 is 70 brake...

My father in law has a 206 with the same engine
    It is very underpowered
Do not buy in any case
Go for the 1.6 Hdi instead

There was no 1.4 with 110 bhp. Possibly a 1.6?

I would say the sticker is possibly from a replacement part.

There is no 1.4 hdi 110.
    Only the 1.6 16 valve dv6 ted4 engine is 110

Had one a few years ago and found it trouble free.I had the XS model which has many gadgets and clocked up over 100k miles in 4 years. My brother in law now has the car and it's still going fine.

I have had a fear of French cars ever since I had a near death experience in a Citroen Xsara when power steering pump failed on the road from Letterkenny to Strabane. That said, I have heard nothing but good things about the hdi engine.

thanks for all the replys everyone we did not want to go any bigger than a 1.4 because the money we MIGHT save driving a diesel would only be spent on higher road tax if we got a 1.6
speed and raw power dont really worrry us but being economical is more important

The combination of a small TD with a fairly heavy car can make for poor driving characteristics - most especially in urban conditions. The problem is the dead-spot that features in all diesels to some extent before the turbo kicks in and this is an especially prevalent in the smaller engine where the naturally aspirated performance leads to a pronounced on/off feel.

It's much less of problem on the open road when the turbo is spinning and you can expect decent response. Drive it in busy town traffic before you buy!

That 1.4 diesel is probably not 110bhp but they seem to go OK if you're not too fussy. The 1.6 diesel goes surprisingly well. However to go back to the original question: don't leave the timing belt for 150k, budget for changing it at about 70k miles. Some dealers will tell you this off the record regardless of the official figure. Also budget for refilling the special liquid (can't think of the name) for the exhaust particulate filter at around 70k miles. This could cost around €300 in some places but less elsewhere.

Generally Pugeots are a strange mixture: good engineering, cheap plastic bits that break, low fuel costs, bad access for repair (high garage bills), comfortable to travel in, stupid wipers etc. There is a 307 1.6d in the family fleet but it's not mine and I would not buy one. I do the servicing on it and it's horrible. However it is doing good work and a lot of other people have got on well with them.

You know people drove around without power steering for decades :)

Your only talking about just over €100 a year extra tax. The lack of power will be very noticable with a couple of adult passengers.

I know, I drove cars without power steering as standard, lots of them. When a car that is supposed to have power steering suddenly doesn't it is not the same as driving a car that never had it in the first place.

I love Peugeots, owned a 206 for years which never gave me trouble until the wishbones went earlier this year. All I had done before were the brakes.

Therein lies the problem. Parts are VERY expensive here. Luckily, I had some help sourcing them, but still hideous amounts of money.

I personally think the 1.4 is underpowered for the size of the car, you're better off going for either 1.6 or 1.9 HDi....

    Good luck!:)
