Ok guys looking at getting a rangefinder. Doesnt need no measure any more than 300 yds really. Not looking to spend a ball, just something cheap and cheerful and reasonably accurate :)

I bought one of those rangefinder from Aldi for a tenner. Not great for hunting because it takes so long to set up but surprisingly accurate and handy size. I was really impressed with its accuracy.

i was looking at the gold ones which are 15x cheaper than the cheapest hunting range finder. how does the one you got work?

Optics is a tricky business. The more you pay, the better it gets.

However, I love Burris scopes: they are great and not expensive. But with a scope, all we are talking about is glass.

Throw in some electronics alongside the glass, and now you have a much more complicated setup. One which I advise to not go cheap.

A cheap range finder is like those 200 euro night vision goggles. Something you buy, because it is cheap, and then later - throw in the closet and never use again because it is useless.

    Don't go cheap.

    Best idea: Leica 1200.

Its a digital optical rangefinder. Basically its a calculator. You have to input the height of your target then you look through and put the bottom line onto the bottom of your target and push a button to bring the top line down to the top of your target. When your target fits just between the two lines your range is displayed in Metres.
Obviously your not gonna input the height of a rabbit but I used it on fence posts which are typically 1m high. There always seems to be a fence post close enough to my target to get a pretty accurate reading. Its really handy because of the size but it does take a min to get a reading.
    Well worth a tenner though.

I got a Nikon Buckmasters for €350 second hand 5 years ago, I'd say they could be picked up for less now.
Ranges out to 350/400yards no bother; however further distances need a steady hand to range

I Think Mayfly36 has that same rangefinder, he got it brave and cheap second hand. As far as I know it does the job...

I bought a Bushnell Elite 1500 rangefinder from "OpticsPlanet" in the US.
I cant fault it and have gotten readings out to 1000 yrds but supposedly its good to 1500 yrds.
It cost about €400 - Dunno if thats in youer price range but as I have one I can vouch for its clarity, dependability and accuracy.
It has a 7X magnification also along with an internal green light that illuminates the reticle in low light conditions.
As the lads said previously - The more you spend the better the glass, there isnt any point in spending pittance and expecting decent accuracy from it.
You may be lucky and pick up a decent 2nd hand one also.
    Hope the info helps.
    :D

I think the best hunting (price vs performance) rangefinder is the old
Leica 800 Laser Rangefinder. Simple one button, illuminated reading.
No set-up, no mode buttons. Simple range. My one cost 248 Euro brand
new in a shop a few years ago. Ranges out to 800m and it really does that.
