E-Books on iPad

    Hey all

My dad recently got an iPad and he wouldn't be the most tech savvy person. I've set it up for him without any difficulties but he now wants to start reading eBooks on it.

Whats the best way to go about this? Should I just download the Kindle App and buy the books through Amazon? Does that provide a framework for reading the book or will it automatically go into iBooks? I'm not too familiar with the eBook options for the iPad so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Kindle will read it's own format as will iBooks. There's also an app called stanza which is also good, probably a few more.

I've read stuff on those 3 I mentioned above and they're all good.

Kindle app and buying through the kindle store is the best option for buying your books but I personally find the iBooks app the best for actually reading them. Kindle store has a far far far better selection for what it's worth.

Also a program called calibre will come in handy for you when you want to convert from say the mobi (kindle format) to epub (iBooks format). Great for converting PDF's too.

The goodreader app allows you to upload PDF's directly through iTunes which saves you syncing every time you want to add a new book. It's also alot easier to find pdf versions of books and it allows other formats such as magazines to be displayed alot better.

I have Kindle and iBooks installed. The problem for me was content. Hardly use either now. Used to be that you had to set your "location" in Kindle to the US to get any decent books.

Check out this neat website for availability comparisons: http://leatherbound.me/

Great advice. I fully agree that the iBooks apps is the best for reading books. I've found all the others to be quite disappointing and a bit awkward but with the iBooks app I tend to forget occasionally that I dont have a paper book in my hands. Calibre is also a great program and very easy to use. It's also free by the way.

Does Calibre convert Kindle format to epub?

I haven't found it's worked for me. I just get "no suitable source format found" when I try.

Is it possible to put all my books, downloaded from various apps as well as directly from the iTunes app store in a single library? Just got an iPad from Santa and haven't quite figured out the ins and outs yet. I'd like to be able to keep all my books together, for example on my iBooks shelf, rather than going in and out of different programs depending on how each book was bought. There's probably a real easy way to do this that I just haven't seen yet :o

Import the books into iTunes and set up book syncing. They will sync to iBooks provided they are a compatible, non-DRM'd format.
