Looking to buy a BMW 320d es 2007. Just looking for advice, are there any major problems that all these cars suffer from?

I know the 02-05 320d's suffered from routine turbo failure but i'm afraid i don't know much about this model. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

    Josh

........... are there any major problems that all these cars suffer from?
    ............

    Yes. High Motor Tax.

Why buy a '07 car, with Annual Motor Tax of €630 (at current rates) , when you can get a '08 car with Motor Tax of €156 (at current rates).

That difference, alone, would cover the interest payments on a €5k loan, approx, therefore, unless you can get a '07 for at least €8k or €9k less than a '08,. don't buy it.

+1 on the above. Also try and get an SE spec at a minimum. ES misses out on climate, cruise, multifunction steering wheel and parking sensors amongst other things. They are options so may be fitted but it's doubtful you will find them all fitted to an ES.

The 08 models with Efficient Dynamics have more power as well.

The 05-07 320d can suffer from turbo failure and swirl flaps being injested into the engine just like the 02-04 models with the 150 hp engine but nothing like to the extent those cars suffered, the 163 hp engines are considerably better in that regard.

The 177 hp engines are too new to say for certain but so far there is no evidence to suggest that these engines are likely to give trouble.

Whatever you do OP, avoid the 08 onwards petrols, these give serious trouble with the injectors and coil packs.

If you've your heart set on a 320d, try and get an SE or M Sport model, the M Sports are meant to be quite comfy despite having 18 inch wheels so I would probably choose the M Sport as I like the look of it and with sports suspension it should be that little bit more rewarding to drive. The ES is quite basic so is best avoided, and most 320ds are SEs or M Sports.

To be honest the ES model is pretty sparcly equipped considering what you will pay for a used 3 Series diesel. I'd aim for at least the SE model as it has alot more standard equipment like MFSW, rear parking sensors, cruise control and climate control. The SE will also be alot easier to sell on when you are done with it. I have the M Sport myself but not everyone likes the firm ride of the sports suspension combined with the run flat tyres and larger wheels. Also aim for a post September 2007 model as that was when Efficency Dynamics was introduced. It increased power from 163bhp to 177bhp and also improved fuel economy due to start/stop technology and regenerative brakes.

It is also worth signing up to the Irish BMW owner's forum www.bmw-driver.net too.

i assume you know about the tax and interior spec with a 07 ES so i wont bother with that

only real problem is the swirl flaps , i know people think that the newer cars dont suffer from these but they do , they are much stronger on the newer cars and fail much less often but for peace of mind you should remove or replace them at 80k miles , its not expensive and for the sake of a few quid you know its sound

other than that nothing really just make sure you change the oil reguluary , I STRESS more often than is required by bmw they have rediculiously long service intervals and if you let it go all the way to the service interval the oil comes out like tar , its more of a marketing ploy than a realistic service scheduele, also change the turbo breather filter helps protect the turbo , but none of these are problems they are just ways of protecting you from future problems
