PS£ not reading discs

Well I was playing BF:BC2 about and hour ago when it just stalled and there was a noise from the cd drive which sounded like the drive trying repeatedly and unsuccessfully to read the disc. I switched it of and then restarted it and now it doesn't read discs (games or dvds). I've even restored the PS3 files that were corrupted but nothing. Please don't tell me I have to send it off just before GT5 on Christmas day! Any ideas guys?

Had the same problem last week with a 3 month old PS3 returned it to Symths and they replaced it. Had original box and receipt.. Seems to be a common problem as they made no attempted to go down the repair route, Kudos to Smyths as I was dreading if it had to be sent for repair so close to Christmas as all my kids asked Santa for were PS3 games.. it was a 120gb version.

Just replaced a blu ray lens last night, worked a treat :)
If its not in warranty then this is what you will have to do.

    Your choices are :

Sony (If in Warranty - if not they charge €160)
Replace yourself (No warranty - Depends how techie you are - $40)
ConsoleRepairs.ie (Or similar shop - prob about €160)

Best of luck before xmas :O

Where did you get a laser unit for $40?

EBAY, got lucky though, most others are €60 or so.

This is very useful too :

Or you could go the small claims court route which others from boards.ie have done successfully

This is true, the courts are also an option.

And congrats to those who got through it :D

It's a disgrace that Sony are getting away with charging people 160e for a refurbed console after a new console breaking after 12 months . . Think about it !!!!!!!! My original ps1 is still working . Got it in '99 .

They don't build em like they used to !

Thanks for the replies lads. I REALLY want to play GT5 over Xmas but as I live in Waterford I don't think that there will be any speedy fixing and returning of the console to me. I also think that the poster above me is right - consoles really aren't made like they used to be. I've had my original playstation since launch - I've stood on it, drop a tv on it and spilt a jug of water on it and it still works. A bit of dust in the PS3 and it's wankered

I may just go down the court route though I've had my PS3 2 years and 9 months now so it'll be a battle

Got my 60gb on day one so got more than i paid for.

So you would not like for companies to stop using lead free solder, for shame.

Shame? I'm not ashamed of wanting to buy a console & not have to worry about whether it will work in six months or a year. Your flight home from Tokyo probably done more harm to the environment than all the PS3's in Ireland...for shame. Maybe you can row home the next time :)
