Why are the Self - Employed shafted?

Just discussing this over the weekend with a few people - this farcical budget provides little if any incentives or support for self employed people, and if they go to the wall, its hard to say the least, for them to get welfare or financial assistance from the state.

So, why is this? I don't understand it and I hope some of you can enlighten me.

By the way I'm not self employed nor do I have anything against those who are. Actually I say fair play to them for starting a business in any economic climate.

Because we are all tax-dodging millionaires. :pac:

There's little point being self employed in this country, unless you're earning close to 100k. I'm discovering this the hard way. To your bank, you might as well be selling the big issue. They were all for it when I spoke to them initially, and they funded me, I haven't missed a single payment with them since starting up, I'm covering my bills and living okay, but getting a mortgage with them would be next to impossible.

    The joys of self employment!

banks not lending to anyone at the moment. This country rewards thieves and spongers and screws those who take initative.

When it comes to self employment in Ireland, the powers that be will praise a self made millionaire from above and tell RTE that "this is the kind of entrepreneurial-ship we need to lift us out of recession". At the same time, the guy just starting up a business will be hammered by red tape, tax hungry vultures and other such things.

Real intuition scares the living daylights out of Irish people.

I know a few people who found out what it was like to be self-employed when things turned for the worst. It took one guy 6 months to get a red cent out of the state to keep him off the streets. And these were people who didn't borrow big and didn't screw anyone over.

I know many self employed who worked hard their whole lives and are now making less than the minimum wage. They are not entitled to the dole, despite having collected and paid lots of vat, tax etc. One has committed suicide.
