to invoice or not

    hi im unemployed ex selfemployed (construction)
    i closed my business down as i wasnt getting any work
    tried to get benefit but cant as my wife works
    i recently did a small job for which i earned 160 for three days work and the client wants an invoice for insurance company
    can i do this as i am deregistered for vat and tax .
    if i invoice as my name will insurance co accept this or do i have to be registered.thanks

    I think if you are earning below a certain threshold you don't have to be registered for VAT. You should, however, be registered as a sole trader.

    You don't need to be registered as a sole trader if operaing under own name and neither do you need to be registered for VAT if your annual turnover is below € 37,500 and you are supplying a service.
    You will however need to declare any earnings on your annual tax return, it may be worth your while telling the Revenue that you are working as a sole trader then if you are checked on then you have shown your honesty and intention to be tax compliant.
    Whether the insurance company accept an invoice which doesn't show a business registration number and VAT is something entirely up to them.
