    Hi all,

I'm currently driving a 07 mazda 3. 1.6 petrol, 70000km. Yesterday i was filling the windscreen washer with water and decided to check the engine oil dipstick. The stick was completely empty. So i put a litre of oil in and its now at the minimum mark. I'm almost sure that no engine oil light a came on in the car. is this normal. I bought his car as new from the mazda dealer.

Is this engine known to burn oil and should a light have came on. This is the second time this has happened.

    Thanks.

hi thanks for the quick reply.

Its been serviced 3 or 4 times i'd say.The last been a year and a half ago by the mazda dealer. I replaced the oil myself prob 6 or 7 months ago.

I'm aware it should be servied more frequently but i suppose this is put on the back burner due to finances.

    cheers

How often do you check the oil?

How often do you top it up?

Has it ever been, and how often has it been, serviced?

70,000km would use up a hell of a lot more than 2 refills of oil.

And BTW, if the "No oil" light comes on, you literally have no oil and shouldn't even driver the car. So consider yourself lucky it wasn't low even to warrant the light coming on.

From what I can see online the oil change interval is around 8,000km in the Mazda 3, (though you should check your manual for a proper figure).

Will do, thanks. So i should be topping up the oil more often.

Was the car stopped for long before you checked? Sometimes if the car has been running you can get a false reading on the dipstick. Just in case you may have inadvertently overfilled it...

Cant imagine the interval being every 8k km either though. Good to change more often but it should be able to go a lot longer than that...

Top her up and hopefully you'll get away with it! I'd check the oil once a week for the first few weeks then once a month or so should do ya.

    Could it be a leak?

    Don't think there's a leak.
As far as I am informed Mazda petrol engines do tend to drink a bit of oil.
I have a Mazda myself and it does need to be topped up regularly.

Need to leave it 10 mins at least before checking level of oil.
