Factory Reset of HTC Desire?

Does anyone know how I can wipe my desire and restore to its original state? I originally wanted to put on a few rom, so I rooted it. This went fine, however I was never able to get custom roms on it – I tried everything – but I must have ballsed it up properly somewhere. I even got the notice that a system update to 2.2 was available, it would download but would not install, I’d just get some android error icon upon restart, would go no further. Can I do a factory reset to undo whatever happened and just go back to stock with the new 2.2 update?

    Thanks

I'm no expert, but when you are installing a new image, most places recommend you make a backup image. Assuming you followed that advice, then you just get back to the boot menu (think it's by powering the phone on whilst holding home key down) and restore the saved image

Not sure if your failed experiments will affect this, but the way to factory reset a Desire (other than via the Factory Reset menu item in Settings, which you presumably can't get to), is:
    1. Turn the power off. If your HTC Desire is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
    2. Hold the Volume Down button
    3. Press and release the Power button
    4. You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastboot, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
    5. Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
    6. Press and release the Power button
    7. Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO

Zascar, is your desire an o2 one originally? If so, or any other branded variant, you need a goldcard for stock updates to work.
I had the exact same sounding failed updates before I realised.
