A lot of cruise ships stop on St.Maarten. It's a beautiful island.

The boards on cruisecritic have a wealth of information on the islands.

Yeah was there once about 5 years ago. At the time I was a frequent flyer with KLM so got 2 business class tickets for free! Booked the hotel separately and hired a moped to get around the island which is quite congested traffic wise.I don't ever remember seeing the island advertised by any Irish travel agent and from being there you meet very few if any Irish or British. You may have to just look at Air France/KLM and go independent. From an aviation point of view it's well worth the trip. And yes there is a bar at the end of the runway on Maho Beach. At the time I was there they used to have a happy hour about 5pm (topless ladies drank for free!!)

Yeah you can literally stand right behind a 747 or A340 as it powers up for take off and it will blow you accross the road onto the beach and into the ocean! Not for the faint hearted..

The bar alone is worth the 9 hour+ flight!

    I'm definetly going there someday.

But I often wondered from watching clips on You Tube etc, would the fumes emitted from the jet engines at such close proximity not leave you feeling somewhat light headed, or even sick?

I was there this time last year on a stop on a cruise. Maho Beach where the planes arrive is better than an amusement park. Got the jet blast from an American Airlines 757 as it took off and a mouthful of sand! Stood under a KLM 747 as it landed. Well worth it. I think I got lucky as alot of heavies arrived that day. Air france a340-300 also arrived while I was there. If you really want to go there to see planes. One day on the island would do. From what I saw of the island a week might be a bit much there.

Try contacting this photgrapher, who is Irish. He may be able to offer advice.

I'd love to go there but sadly the wife is none too impressed by the idea. In fairness, showing her videos like this probably didn't help!:pac:
