Predicting Contrails

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any method employed by airlines to determine the likelihood of forming persistent contrails.. I've noticed a distinct increase in lingering trails which ultimately turn into cloud cover.

I know that the Aplleman Chart can be used to predict such trails but are there any industry standard techniques used to do the same?

I doubt it somehow. What use would it be for the airlines? Contrails have no effect on aircraft in flight. It might be useful for meteorologists or others. But not airlines.

Thanks. Yeah I guess it would be of very little use to airlines but just thought I'd ask anyway, I just wondered if there was a way to accurately determine where they were most likely to develop. As I said, there already is a system which can be used but it relies on data which is only available for one area of Ireland (Valentia Island) so it wouldn't really be applicable to anywhere else.

tbh the only reason I'm interested in it is to show some posters on another forum that these persistent contrails are not chemtrails () as they assume that they're being used for some sinister purpose. If Joe Soap is able to predict the formation of trails then it may help them to realise that it isn't some insidious exercise being carried out by whoever.

You'll never convince the chemtrailers. To believe that stuff in the first place you have to wired up incorrectly. I've had several run ins with chemtrailers. Leave them to it with their paranoia.

Although we know the range of temperature and moisture conditions conducive to contrail formation. It would be hard to predict them unless you have direct measurement on the day with say a weather balloon or a weather aircraft. You could predict that a particularly day is more likely to see contrails. Today for example, looking out the window. But as North Atlantic tracks vary by the day and also flight levels depending on the position of the jet stream it's a bit of a lottery.
