I have a friend going to the states in January and was looking into getting them to buy me one over there, however the apple.com site only has the iphone prices for AT&T contracts but states you can pay the full whack in a store.

just wondering does anyone know what price this is for the 32gb model? I presume $699-799?

sorry for repeating, the apple website says this:

Is a new contract with AT&T required?

A new 2-year commitment with AT&T is required when starting your purchase online. Additionally, the Apple Retail Store offers a no-commitment iPhone for the full retail price.

So I assumed you can buy one for a bigger price tag unlocked like you can on the apple.ie store

You can buy a sim free iPhone on the Apple website here so why wouldn't you be able do the same thing in the US?

verizon are going to be offering the iphone sometime soon so maybe the contract is up wih at&t, whenever that happens ya should be able to buy them sim free

All pure speculation at the moment hinging on the long, long rumoured CDMA iPhone.

I think you need to show an American passport as well or at least you used to have to when you were buying one in the US apple store.

Even if/when Verizon get the iPhone, it is likely that you'll still need an AT&T contract to get the 3G version. Latest rumours are that Verizon aren't interested in becoming part of a free for all, they want to be one of only two suppliers, with them being the sole CDMA supplier. If that is the case (and it is a realistic rumour), then there'll still be no sim-free iPhones in the US for quite a while. If you're going to be near Canada, they are available there as far as I know, just check the Canadian Apple Store online to see.

Because they have multiple carriers here, whereas only one in the US. I think you can buy one without contract, but its locked to AT&T.

The no-committment version is still locked to AT&T, so you'd have to get it jailbroken. That's assuming they still offer them and that it is not just that they forgot to take down the reference on their website, there seemed to be quite a lot of bad press when they started offering that due to the fact that it was still locked.

The US won't accept its place as merely another province of Ireland, and therefore insist on having their own laws and business contracts etc.

that would make more sense then, since AT&T are so big over in the states. That clears that up so, thanks mate
